According to a number of filed patents, Nintendo's next console, the NX, will use remote computing, the use of remote hardware via the internet, to improve the quality of NX gaming. This got me thinking. I travel frequently, and cannot afford a laptop that is anywhere near as powerful as my desktop at home. All of this could be solved with remote computing. I could use my desktop's processing power even when I am away from home. Essentially, all I would need to carry around with me is a wireless enabled screen, which could take the form of a tablet, I suppose. With this system, I could use an otherwise low-end device and get high end results.

I am aware that remote computing still has a few problems. One is WiFi and other forms of wireless communications. They can be slow and unreliable, especially over long ranges. Another is security. With direct remote access like this over the internet, there are surely security risks. However, both of these factors should improve drastically in the next few years.

So, I'm asking you guys. Where do you think remote computing is going? Will it become obsolete after the NX fades away? Will it incorporate itself into future versions of operating systems? What are some good uses you can think of for remote computing? How will this affect the PC and laptop markets?

And I agree with you. The major barrier is WiFi.
