I have a Friend who designs 3D models and also prints them. I asked him if 3D printing a case was possible, he said yes agreed to charge only what the Filament costs him.

Now my question is, is 3D printing a case worth it?

And, how much would the Filament cost for printing a Mid Tower case, the same form factor as a Mastercase 5 (in general, I would use a good quality Filament which is also cheap)?

3D printing a case is an interesting idea could be what you, but it will not be cheaper than buying a prebuilt case or stronger unless you make walls very thick . also most computers are made of metal not plastic

time to design it + error in print + low quality of filiment compared to metal + havinh to add your own I/O is not worth it

Stronger, I had that in mind but since my friend gets all the Filament for less than half of what's available in the market (because he runs a 3D printed accessories factory and gets the Filament directly from the manufacturers) I think it can cost cheaper.

The only situation I could see it being potentially worthwhile would be in extreme mini-itx or even smaller applications.

I don't think there would be an error in print, the guy runs a 3D printing factory and that's what his business is.

Time to build an HTPC then :P , just for the cause of having a 3D printed case.

I/O won't be a problem, I looked it up on eBay, and I can get all that in like $15 not to mention I can salvage it from my current case.

Also, I have dropped the idea since it won't be durable, but I am still thinking about an ITX 3D printed case for an HTPC.

Well depending on his printer the tolerance and the accuracy may not be precise enough to be able to properly attach parts. But some filaments can be durable, but they aren't cheap, some can even be metal coated
