The PSU is crap, Get a PSU from XFX or Seasonic or selected ones from EVGA like the B2, G2, GS or GQ.

It is fine other than that. 

 

What is you HDD? What is your SSD?

It depends on what you mean by "works". Technically, the components will work together, but you can always reallocate a bit of your budget to optimize your PC for your purpose.

 

I agree with Comic_Sans_MS on the PSU, though. Try to get something a little bit better: you will not be replacing a decent PSU anytime soon (it can last for several system upgrades, so it is worth investing a bit more money there), and you definitely don't want a bad quality PSU because of the problems it can cause. Linus has plenty of build logs with valuable tips for chosing PSUs (especially the "budget" build logs), so you might want to take a look on some of his videos.

 

Other than that, this pc will grant you some nice 1080p gaming, moderate multitasking and great productivity (my opinion, obviously).

in direct conflict with some around here cx psu are very good imho. but at the price you are paying far that and to be able to breathe i would grab a cx 600w or evga bronze 500w as the price just makes sense for future growth etc.

For my PSU, I've Negotiated with one of my friend for his 2 month old Corsair CS850 for free.

I'm currently on a tight budget, so I won't be getting an SSD for a boot drive "for now".

HDD : Seagate Barracuda 500GB from my previous PC (planning to upgrade int he future)

For my PSU, I've Negotiated with one of my friend for his 2 month old Corsair CS850 for free.

I'm currently on a tight budget, so I won't be getting an SSD for a boot drive "for now".

Okay you should be fine. The CS is a huge upgrade compared with a VS.

The GTX 960 will perform better than the R9 280 but you might as well spend it on a R9 380 instead, which is essentially a R9 285 that will outperform the GTX 960.

Nice. Don't worry about the SSD. SSD's are enormously overrated and I would never take money out of my CPU or GPU budget for one.

They perform very similarly. Like @HKZeroFive said, the 380 is significantly better than either if you can find one for a similar price.

I would not go so far as saying SSDs are overrated, specially for operating system installs. Random reads and writes are simply ridiculously faster than regular hard drives and make the system significantly more responsive. It makes sense to have a SSD especially if you plan to run Windows 8 or above (Windows 7 tends to be more hard drive friendly).

 

All that said, though, you can consider the SSD as a luxury item, in the sense that you don't actually need it. You can do fine without one, so if you are on a tight budget and have to choose, definitely get a better GPU or even a better CPU.
