Hey everyone,

This is my very first build and I'm lost. I just got into computer gaming and I love it! I really don't have another reason to build a computer except for gaming. I am a pitcher with the Yankees. I travel a lot through out the year. So it needs to be small something the I can get a quality mobo that's mATX or ITX.

So far I have gotten myself a little EVGA GTX 980 Classified for this build. I got it on sale for 480 USD. That's my parts list so far.

So the big problem is I need a CPU that won't bottleneck my 980 and has at least 4 cores over 3.2ghz for under $200 preferably under $150. I will be waiting till October or later to build this. I'm not afraid to overclock or anything like that. I had my heart set on the AMD FX 6300 but an i5 might be more future proofed. Let me know what you all think! Thank you!

What's your overall budget? Where do you live? If we're to make recommendations, we'll need details, as we need to factor in the cost of the platform and the regional variations in price.

EDIT: Nevermind, I just found out what 'The Yankees' are. However, an overall budget will help.

For the CPU alone. Intel and AMD platforms don't cost the same, and on the Intel side, LGA 1150 and 1151 platforms don't cost the same either.

Seeing as how the 6300 is effectively a 3 core processor, it doesn't really meet your specs.

An i5 is probably what you want here. At the $200 price range you are looking at something like a 6500, though for just a little more you get the overclock-able 6600k.

TBH I'd think somebody who pitches for a team with a payroll of over 200 million could buy any damn rig they wanted with no thought as to the price.

I set the budget for a goal. I'm bored out of my mind in Spring Training rn. So I figured I'd get to work on this project I've got.

This is quite a bit over the $1000 (my list inlcudes the 980 btw) but would provide a great gaming experience in a very small form factor.

Don't get the PSU... It's pretty low tier and I wouldn't recommend overclocking on it.

Something from SeaSonic or XFX would fair better.

'Fanboyism is stupid' - someone on this forum.

Be nice to each other boys and girls. And don't cheap out on a power supply.
