Chromecast Input Descision

So I am considering buying a Chromecast, but my monitor does not have a HDMI port. (It is an older monitor) I was wondering if I used a cheap adapter (HDMI to DVI) would I still get the same experience as a actual HDMI input.

I believe you wont get sound, I'm pretty sure DVI doesn't do sound, so you'll need an adapter that compensates for that.

What if the monitor doesn't have an audio port or built in speakers, does that mean no sound?

You'd need to hook the audio directly to your speakers, probably through a 3.5mm jack.

 

Or 

 

You could have that 3.5mm go into your Line In and set it to always listen to the device to have audio pass through your PC to your speakers. I do this with my Xbox so I don't have to move my headset from my PC.

This is away from my PC or console, this is a standalone monitor and chromecast.

DVI doesn't transmit sound. That wouldn't work.

Thats my point, The monitor has no speakers or audio jacks. Is there any way to get sound without an extra PC nearby to go through?

You also need USB power to the chrome cast. If you monitor has 2 usb ports, you can get some cheap USB powered speakers with a 3.5mm jack. Or you can get speakers with wall power.

I'm actually thinking about doing the same with a older Apple TV. I was going to purchase this but I am going with a cheaper VGA option.
