Interference And New Headphones

Go to solution Solved by MayflowerElectronics,

How much do the 990s leak? I know they are open so wasn't sure if they would be suitable for portable use and don't want it to annoy people at Uni. That's why I was leaning more towards closed.

And the ODAC is more than I was looking to spend and can't really find it easily in the UK. Importing isn't much of an option as the Import Tax brings the price even higher. As I have essentially no audio equipment, was looking to get a cheaper AMP/DAC combo akin to E07k/E10/E17 so I had both a nicer DAC and a way to drive some entry level "audiophile" headphones.

Price wise, about £180 total as a maximum for both. Don't need mics or anything like that.

For those who wanted to know, its an OCZ ZT 750W PSU, Gigabyte Windforce 7950 GPU, and the Mobo is a Gigabyte Z87X-D3H.

It is more likely to be the DAC, its a very cheap one that I grabbed as at the time I just wanted something that worked for Xbox/PC and was fairly cheap.

For portable usage you need the DT 770, the 990 will leak a lot.

For a cheap DAC, pick up something from fiio, if you ever want an upgrade, look at the o2/ODAC.

Hiya,

Currently getting interference, a hissing along with a coil whine sort of sound through my headphones, but only since I've gotten my new computer, works fine on others in the house. This is with Turtlebeach X12 and the DSS Surround Sound Processor. Anything I can do to fix it? When I've got something playing I can't hear it its just if it goes quiet. ( I got a mild hiss before, but only audible at very loud)

Leads me on to my next bit, I'm intending to buy some new headphones, Currently looking into the Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro 80 Ohm and an FiiO E10 / E07K ( If I want to use with Phone, not decided yet). Is this a good match up and good for music (70%~) + Gaming (30%). I know open gives a nicer sound stage on something like an open pair on Sennheisers, but since I'm going to Uni would rather have closed to be safe and not annoy people, and give me the option to use on the train etc if needed. Music is varied, Rock, Alt Rock, Metal, Electronic, House, Chiptune.

So in essence I'm asking,

- Anyway to reduce interference through my headphones?

- Are the DT770 Pro 80 Ohm + FiiO E10 a good idea for my use case?

Cheers :)

What's in your pc? mobo, PSU, GPU etc?  Sounds like there might be a poor powersupply or a dodgy connection in your PC.

Grammar and spelling is not indicative of intelligence/knowledge.  Not having the same opinion does not always mean lack of understanding.

You have a bad source, which means you need to get a new DAC. I don't think the power supply/GPU matters in this situation. I think his new computer might have a problem or the DSS thing he's talking about.

Here's my suggested setup -

Does it get louder if you turn up the fan on your video card?

This was my problem, there is only one spot for my sound card to go, and its right against the video card. When my gpu fan ramped up the interference got worse.

What I ended up getting was a "Ground Loop Isolator" for 3.5mm headphones which plugged into the headphone jack of my soundcard and then plugged my speakers into it.

This is what I got: http://www.jaycar.co.nz/productView.asp?ID=AA3086

You can get something similar from amazon: http://www.amazon.com/PAC-Ground-Isolator-3-5-Applications/dp/B001EAQTRI

Power supplies can cause this issue, i know this as a fact for GPU's, so if you find you cannot fix it with a new card, try a different PSU.

If a power supply is so bad that you can pick up noise from it, you have worse problems than audio issues. He's picking up noise from within his computer that the various components create, and his DAC is picking them up (poorly designed/bad). Don't go swapping PSU's for this kind of situation, and please don't recommend it if you don't really know what you are talking about.

Cheers, was thinking that sort of thing, but nice to have someone who knows what they are talking about confirm it :)

+1 for the fiio option and the any excuse to get decent headphones is a good excuse reason.
