Hello

This is my first time building a computer and I was wondering if I could get some critiques on my parts before I order them.  I intend to use this computer for gaming, as well as engineering applications such as CAD, CFD, and FEA.  I do intend to attempt some overclocking on the CPU and GPU.

Parts:

CPU: i5-6600k

CPU cooler: Cooler Master Hyper D92

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z170-HD3P

RAM: G.Skill Ripjaws V Series (2x8GB) DDR4-2400

HDD: WD Blue 2TB 3.5" 5400 RPM

SSD: Samsung 850 EVO-Series 250 GB 2.5"

Video Card: EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Ti 6GB FTW

Case: Fractal Design R5 w/Window

PSU: EVGA 650W 80+ Gold Semi-Modular ATX PSU

Monitor: LG 34UM67-P UltraWide 34"

I intend to clone my laptops hard drive (it is running windows 7 that I didn't register) and then use the free upgrade to windows 10 for the OS

any tips or recommendations are welcome, as I said, I have never done this before, but I have been watching a lot of LTT, and JayzTwoCents videos.  I do realize that the GPU is probably overkill, but I do intend to make use of GPU acceleration for the engineering applications and that does benefit from the extra CUDA cores.

Edit: Budget is about 1800 USD, but I know I am slightly over (might wait and buy different parts as they go on sale)

Hello

What budget what country?

Your budget seems misplaced, are you doing the CAD work professionally? because you'll probably want a workstation GPU in that case, and is CUDA your only option? because if you can use Open CL AMD's GPUs give you more bang for your buck overall.

also a 4k display is a much better choice than a 21:9 1440p display, you get more pixels for less money, though what you should really go for is a 32" or higher 4k display for productivity.

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

Overkill? Im thinking if this is your first computer build. Start with something lighter like 970, and shrink your monitor.

Why ?

What would be the difference ?

He should go for something that fits his needs and budget.

CPU: Intel i5-4590 | Motherboard: Asus H97M-E | GPU: Sapphire Nitro R9 390 | RAM: 2x4Gb Kingston HyperX Fury Black | SSD: Sandisk Plus 240Gb HDD: Seagate 250Gb  | PSU: Seasonic G650 80+ Gold | Case: NZXT S340

I am who I am.

im just saying that its his first build, going straight into a high-end card, instead of learning what suits his needs. Yes, it might fit his budget, but wouldnt it be better if some of the money was spent on some other parts? (I have no clue what parts, im just sayin!), i bought a titan, and after a while i figured out "What the hell am i suppose to do with this"?

I'm no expert on skylake "k" CPUs and "z" mobos, but at first glance, this is a nice build that fits his needs well.

Well, if he is already at the budget, increase your cores to a i7-6700k. bump down to a 970 in my opinion. Youll thank me later (Original Poster)

A 5820K is going to be better overall for professional applications and he probably needs more RAM

(small tip: Wait for Pascal!)

yah, I wasn't sure about the balance of CPU to GPU, but engineering programs don't tend to multithread too well (they are physics based, so they need the previous calculation before the next one can be started)  which is why I went with the 6600k instead of the 6700k (more threads wouldn't do much, especially not for an extra $100) or 5820k (more IPC is better in this case than more threads/cores).  I am currently in the US, but will probably be buying the parts when I am in Israel (shipping from US to Israel won't be as bad as usual since I have a few shipping benefits).  I am starting Graduate school and want this for gaming/ maybe some research/ fun extra projects, but I will probably have access to high quality computers at school as well.  I am in no rush to build this, and Pascal may be an option, but I don't know (it may not release till december for all we know), also from what I hear, they are gonna be geared more towards workstations like a Tesla card which is practically useless for gaming, please correct me if I am wrong.
