I received R9 390 nitro today and already ran into problem with noise.

When fans are spinning I can hear that whirring/bearing noise from it. When fans are on 20% speed (that acctually means fans will stop spinning), that noise will go away. It sounds almost like some cable might be in the way of some fan, but I checked them all and nothing apperas to be that problem.

Is it normal to get that kind of noise?

Also while testing that I set fan speed manually to 20% so fans stoped spinning ... forgot about that and run my game. For few minutes FPS was fine, but then droped to like 20 and I closed game to check what's wrong ... well temperatures spiked up to 94°C for like 2 minutes. I just hope I didn't dammage my card on the first day after I got it :(

But I set my fans back to auto, and temperatures are always below 70°C while benchmarking and FPS still seems to be okay. I can only pray that those 94°C temp spike didn't leave any pernament dammage on my card.

But that noise is still there when fans are spinning ... so damn annoying. I ordered that GPU from some german website and I'm from Slovenia, so returning this card and waiting for warranty might take a lot of time, that's why I would like to ask here for support first before I have to pay 50€ for sending GPU back and waiting 1-2 months for new one :(

That wouldn't have damaged your card. It throttled itself(hence fps drop) before any damage could have happened.

that sounds great :)

just need to figure out to fix that fan noise. My previous R9 270X didn't make that sound ever. I understand that normal fan noise, but that whiring noise is just so annoying

That kind of sound is best to describe what I'm having here on my GPU.

That doesn't happen at certain percentage, but always when fan are active. It can be 25 or 100%. But at 100% it's hard to hear it because of acctuall fan spinning etc.

And may I ask what you did with your r9 280x bad bearing fans?

I just set a custom fan curve. At 65-70% fan speed they will be some crackling sound. I just set the curve to skip those.

And another question regarding my new GPU ... why does usage keeps jumping from 0 to 100% while gaming? on my previous it was more or less constant 60-90% usage without those 0% drops.GPUusage.jpg.38b14b1e724b49d22e186201ef3

If there's a bad fan bearing, then it'll make a whirring/scraping noise after a certain speed. That sounds like what you've got. You should RMA the card, since it's not gonna fix itself. If you bought it in-store, they'll probably let you exchange it since it's a manufacturer defect.

Well since that bad bearing starts exactly when fans start spinning I guess I will just have to return it and wait for new one.

Well I'm playing only Guild Wars 2 so can only tell for that one.

Benchmarks on the other hand are all running 90-100% usage all the time without any droppings to 0%.

Ah... GW2... That game is pretty cpu dependant. But that 100-0 drop is pretty weird.

Yeah I know it's CPU heavy, but my CPU usage is steady on 30-40% ... I know that this game doesn't have perfect optimisation, but those spikes are realy weird. I still have 60 fps in game all the time, so as long as FPS aren't droping like that I don't realy care about that. Just seems weird to me :)

Also I sent email to shop where I bought my GPU. I calculated cost for shipment from my location to theire store, and it comes to 120€, so I asked them if they will cover that xD

I don't want to pay 120€ extra just to maybe get better GPU without bad bearing fan noise.

Just one more question about this topic ... is there any way that I could fix that fan bearing?

Was talking with seller and UPS delivery about returning it, but I would need to pay 120€ for delivery back to seller. After that seller would give my card into testing and determine my product value (because package was open, that means it's not worth as much as totaly new). So before they get my card and theire IT guys check my card it would take around 3 weeks + another 1 week to send me new card. So 1 month for that + 120€ and not even sure how much value they would give to my card and what else I would need to pay.

I'm trying to avoid sending card back, and trying to find some way to fix that fan bearing on my own. Any ideas/suggestions?

I don't know. You could look into replacement fans (that's what I did with my 7970,) but that might be a fair bit to get. I don't think it's practical to manually repair the fans. They might not work afterwards.

Well that warranty sticker isn't on fans, so I will try to remove fans and maybe use some oil on them. Will check few guides before doing so.

If that won't help I will just have to wait another month for my new card.

First time ordering from outside my country and already have problems with RMA. Bad luck I guess :)
