Ram not useable

Hi I'm running on windows 8.1 professional with 12gb of ram. When all 12gb are installed windows says that only 6gb are usable. Does anyone know how to fix this?

What kind of motherboard do you have? Is windows suggesting that it only can recognize 6 GB or that you can only utilize 6 GB?

I'm using a Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3.

Is this a new build/buy or has this just started happening?

CPU - AMD 8-core 8320 3.50ghz

Motherboard -  Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3

RAM - Crucial Ballistix Sport 1600mhz(i have 2 2gb sticks and 2 4gb sticks)

GPU - XFX Radeon R7 360

Ok so it looks like your motherboard isn't the issue. What kind of RAM are you using and how many sticks?

I used to have 4gb and I upgraded to 12gb.

how many sticks of ram are now in the pc?

Have you tried taking out half of the ram and seeing how much windows says is there.

Also check the bios to see if its your OS or hardware

That would make sense if he was only able to use 8 GB or 4 GB but in his case it's like his computer is using a stick from each set if it recognizes 6 GB

I did try taking the 2gb sticks out and windows read the 2 4gb sticks as 8gb and all 8 are useable.

Got to "My computer" or "This PC" right click and go to properties. How much RAM does it say you have.

Also like I said I was upgrading and wanted to add on to what I already had.

With my 2 4Gb sticks it reads all 8 okay.

Ok so Littlelegsone was right, it isn't recognizing the other RAM because it's a different speed.

There should be. You'll have to go into the Bios and underclock the 1600 Mhz RAM to 1333 Mhz. If that doesn't work I wouldn't really know what to do. Sorry!

I've never used a Gigabyte Bios before, but you should be able to find the area where you can change settings/voltages for RAM, and you should be able to select the frequency the RAM operates at.
