Hi, I have been wanting to put a FreeNAS together for a while and these are the parts I have got so far:

CPU- Intel Xeon W3520

MB - GIGABYTE X58-USB3

RAM - 8GB ECC RAM

I got these for all quite cheap, under £50 for all of them together and I was just wondering is this is any good to start with. I thought I needed a decent CPU, even though its old, for things like multi-channel ethernet connections and better transfer speed, should I change anything? Im going to get the HDD and case soon too, although it will need to be a ATX case, thanks ;)

That for fiddy bucks is very good. It should work very well as long as you dont expect too much from it :) If you want better transfer speeds, you can get a 10 gigabit pcie expansion card.

Yeah I just want some decent transfer speed, around 100mb/s? What could I expect? Thanks ;)

You could easily get 100 mb/s with that!

As jon said a 10gb/s or a multi link Ethernet connection could improve this too!

Cheers,sam

Great thanks, yeah I am looking at some multi-link nics too :) also I'm brand new to this NAS build and was just wondering, I know it's a stupid question, do you connect through the router to the other computer or do you connect directly between machines using Ethernet, thanks :)

No problem, hope the build goes well.

Out of curiosity, what raid setup will you do?

Thank you, me too I might post a build log maybe :D

Im not really sure, I don't know too much I was thinking RAID 1?

Well if you are using 2 drives, that's a good setup.

Then just get a 2 port raid card of amazon or something and you should be up and running!

Yep, a few expansion cards and you'll be running a little beast there.

Thanks, would you recommend any or should I just get a cheap one?

Yep, linus very recently did a video on some good 10 gigabit network expansion cards. Honestly though, find some cheap stuff and then just do a real quick google search to see if there's any major problems with it and you should be fine.

Well if you had a decent buget and want reliability go for WD red hard drives and something like this:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00BUC3NNS?keywords=raid%20card&qid=1456054709&ref_=sr_1_9&sr=8-9

If you are a cheep person, WD green hdds will be ok and something like this:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B003GS8VA4?keywords=raid%20card&qid=1456054709&ref_=sr_1_2&sr=8-2

no I'm not sponsored :)
