Video Codec / Format

stan92

First question is does codec = format?

Second question is what codec / format is a bluray disc?

Third question is what's the best codec / format for ripping DVD's and then blurays?

1 codec=/=format. Cause you can have many extensions like m4v and mp4 with the same codec
2 bluray is propably Mpeg4 h.264
3 H.264 .mpeg4

H.264 is a codec and used to encode/create the file. MP4 is a format. MKV is a container format that can contain an unlimited amount of audio, video, picture, or subtitle tracks.

Not sure what's the best--there might not be one but i prefer FLAC.

I'm not sure what you mean by changing circumstances.

My mistake, FLACs are for audio. Mkv can be lossless. Lossless movie formats are very uncommon for consumer use. (In other words, I'm no sure) What most people do is use a lossless codec to create the video. H264 has a lossless mode.

CDs use CDA. What the songs were before they convert it to cda depends on the artist.

@WoodenMarker ok so CDA is better than FLAC even?

No difference besides what it's used for.

@WoodenMarker so quality is the same? what is each used for?

CDA is only for CD's.

@WoodenMarker go into more detai please

Not sure what your goal is. I'm not an audio expert.

That's the only significant difference between the two I can think of.
