Need opinions on my first build

StormingSurge

So, this is my first build. I haven't ordered the parts at all, but I would like to see what people have in mind. I want to keep this build under $850 U.S. This does exclude the Thermal Compund and Anti Shock Bracelet just so you guys know. Though the price does include the OS as I don't have any boot device yet. If you guys have any suggestions as to what I should upgrade in the build, let me know. Here is the link to the build: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/kcVXTW

Thanks guys!

Edit: Just in case you guys need to know, I did include the Thermal Compound and Anti Shock stuff in the build, but just act like they don't exist. Unless of course you think I need better Thermal Compound or an Anti Shock Bracelet.

I might go with a strictly Newegg build to make it easier, and look into that Windows 10 key. It does fo over my budget a bit, but I might use the ssd and 1tb drive, just use a smaller ssd. If you have a different suggestion for the gpu, that would be great.

Well, all the prices listed are from Newegg...

I figured you'll be fine with a $920 build since you suggested one but it looks like I'm wrong. Any reason why you want a different GPU?

Wow, that is perfect for me, thanks for that suggestion. I might just go the extra $5 to get a single of 8gb ddr4 ram so it is easier to upgrade later on.

Not to be bias towards AMD, but many of my friends who built their computers had AMD graphics cards in them, and experienced many issues with them like crashing and sometimes even the card just stopped working. They switched over to Nvidia cards and now they work just fine. They all had different AMD cards, a few exceptions for them bring similar, but overall not a great AMD experience, but a good Nvidia experience.

I'd probably stick with the R9 390 unless you can find a cheaper GTX 970. Otherwise, you're gonna have to spend more.

AMD's drivers are decent and your friends' situations that you have described are really the minority. If it ever does break, you can always RMA it.

Good. Almost 100%. Just a few things need to be changed/added.

  • Get an SSD for your boot and primary program drive. Choose the capacity as you need but you can't go wrong wirh 240gb. Go for one of ADatas or curtails lower end drives or a Samsung 850 evo if you want to splash out a bit more
  • Maybe look at a 390 or a 950. They are oath better value for money than the 960.
  • Get 8gb of ram at first and then see if you need more.  Unless you are doing a lot of content creation 16gb of ram is unnessisary
  • a z170 chipset is unnessisary for a non overckockable cpu (looking at Intels micro code updates here). Maybe look at a quieter cooler as you won't be overclocking
  • DO. NOT. TOUCH. THAT. PSU. I have had them blow up (2 out of three units can you believe it?) Go for one of seasonics OEM 80plus gold supplies or a corsair Cx PSU

Alright, gonna have to look at those later on. The motherboard that I have chosen was only chosen because it was in a good price range, being good for only 89.99 I believe it was. The power supply, I might be able to drop the optical drive and get the corsair one if I do it right. I'm on my phone right now so not much I can do on here. Thanks!

Great :)

It won't be a problem to drop the optical drive. In this day and age it is almost useless

Still gonna have a hard time finding a graphics card. I went with that gpu since i usually just watch YouTube videos and then when I play video games, the quality doesn't matter too much. As long as it is at least at 720p quality, I'm fine with it. For that reason I might stick with the 960, though if you do still have a better suggestion, let me know.

If you don't mind turning down the settings and you run720p I'd go down a step to the gtx950

Here is an updated parts list. I had time to redo the parts list. I stuck with the GTX 960 since I might need the extra power every now and then. http://pcpartpicker.com/p/2cKQTW

Once again, made some edits to the build. I put Windows 8.1 on there instead of 10 since I can just upgrade that to 10. A few minor changes to save some money. This might turn out to be a summer project for me since I need to save up a lot of money for it. I was just planning out now, so I just want to get one final check from some of you guys. Here is the Link: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/DTRXTW

Thanks!

Ok great. I might look at a 380x which you can find for a similar price to a 960 and will offer better preformance. Also check out kinguin for cheap OEM unit of Windows 10. About 20 dollars us. They also offer a protection program so if anything doesn't work you can be refunded.
