New built pc wont POST :(

Go to solution Solved by NeoFrux,

When you say you've checked the power connectors, you mean the 24-pin ATX connector and the 8-pin 12V CPU power connector, right? Have you checked the CPU fan's connection to the CPU fan header? You might also want to double-check the front panel wiring - If an LED is plugged into the reset header, that would fool the motherboard into thinking that the reset button is being held down. You should also check the SLOW_MODE switch between the 24-pin ATX connector and the SATA ports on your motherboard to make sure that it's down, not up. You could try it in the up position, too; This is mostly for extreme overclocking, but will apply conservative clock speeds during boot time to prevent crashes, so it's not likely to cause any problems.

If none of that makes a difference, you might try re-seating the CPU itself. If you used the pre-applied thermal material on the cooler, that should still be fresh enough to survive that, though you'll want to replace it sooner or later once you get things up and running. If you used third-party thermal material, you'll probably want to clean it with rubbing alcohol and dry it before reapplying.

Hi there, i've just built a pc for the first time and did everything no static, and followed an LTT guide.

IT Wont Post

My Hardware:

Cpu: AMD Vishera fx 4350 (stock cooling)

Mobo: MSI 970 Gaming - no spot for integrated graphics

GFX : EVGA GTX 950 ssc acx

Ram: 8Gb PNY single channel (I know I'm a peasant)

Psu: EVGA 700w Bronze

Storage: Hitachi HDD 1Tb

Case: Corsair Spec-01

What I Know:

  • There are no audible beeps
  • mobo turns on
  • fans work
  • power lights and button work
  • Tried with two monitors and two hdmi cords

What I've Tried:

  • Clearing the cemos
  • Checking power connectors
  • Verifying that parts are compatible
  • Tried gfx in a different spot

What I think:

  • GFX is broken
  • Mobo is broken

Thank You for taking the time to help! :)

Damn that took a while to write so others posted before me.

First off, welcome to the forum.

a couple tips before we dive into this problem.

cemos is actually spelt CMOS, it's an acronym,

don't put everything in the case before you test it-it's a pain to work with in the case.

make sure everything is seated properly. the ram should be all the way in, connectors should be plugged in. There is a 6 or 8 pin connector that powers the CPU, and a 20 or 24 pin (usually 24 pins) that powers the motherboard and the PCIe slots. You don't have to worry about the HDD or SSD yet as we want to boot to BIOS first. The way you said it makes it seems like it starts up then shuts down. If so it could be a problem with something not seated properly. Like Runefox said, try reseating the CPU itself and make sure the heatsink is making good contact. The computer won't start if the cpu is too hot.

Just wanted to clarify, the CPU power connector is either 4 or 8 pins; PCI-E is either 6 or 8 pins. It wouldn't be a good thing to mix those up, since the wires are inverted. In the case of this board (and likely this PSU), the CPU connector is going to be an 8-pin.

You're right, thanks for the correction

Ok so first off I made sure that all connectors are in the right spot, plus everything is labeled so I know the difference between the PCI-e connector, and the cpu power connector, I've tried the slow mode switch in both positions a few times, the cpu fan is plugged into the correct header, and I've tried the ram in different slots always making sure its pushed all the way in. (one long run-on sentence) Also the system turns on and stays on it just doesn't post. I can try and return the GFX today, if that is the problem, and I can get a new Mobo in like a week. I do mean the 24pin and 8 pin when I said power connectors, and I'm pretty sure the front panel connectors are in the right spot but I can try reseting them anyway. Thank you again, pls help very competitive CS player suffering from CS withdrawel.

No disrespect meant, just want to make sure we're all clear on what's been done already. Better technicians than I have made mistakes like that from time to time.

The unfortunate part about this is that this motherboard doesn't seem to have a speaker or an LED readout for POST codes, so we can't be sure of what exactly is causing the problem. Do you have another video card you might be able to try in the system? Doesn't need to be anything fancy, just something with an output you can connect a monitor to. It's probably a stretch to ask if you have any other RAM you could try, but if you do, definitely give that a go. I'd suggest again reseating the CPU itself, and maybe giving the socket a spritz with some compressed air in the off chance any dust managed to settle in the short time between revealing the board and socketing the CPU.

So I cant recreate it so ill just explain, basically I turned on the system and the display turned turquois with little squares filling the screen each square had a letter that would sometimes change and then a spade in it, then it suddenly vanished. :( I bet somethings broken

Sounds like either the GPU you used for this test is dead, or the BIOS on your motherboard is seriously borked.

ok now I'm confused even more, it just booted saying the ram was changed, and told me to press something then as I went to press the button it went black saying no video, the the msi gaming bios start screen came up and then dispeared

Starting to lean more towards motherboard, especially if this is the older GPU you're seeing this on..
