I have an evga 960 and with it came a free backplate. I have a white build and it only recently came to mind that I could paint the back plate. My question is what should I use to paint. Will a couple layers of white spray paint work or would it melt. Also is there any tricks or things to watch out for while painting. Also any tips on painting the cooler and if its worth doing would be nice also.

Painting it white is possible, general purpose spray paint will work but for white if your looking for the most vibrate white automotive stuff is the best for this. You will want to prep the surface either by lightly sanding or scuffing it before painting for giving it a thin coat of primer to promote extra adhesion which is not a bad idea. For the heatsink though it's best to leave it since painting it will affecting cooling performance. I have a guide here under General Painting that goes over everything in detail:

Will a couple coats of just standard hobby spray paint work or does it really need to be a more serious automotive paint for it to work.

Regular hobby or hardware store stuff will also work without any problem.

I have wanted to sleeve my cables but my psu is non modualar. Will I still be able to do it? Also my psu for the gpu power has two plugs but I have no intention of getting a new gpu and would need new psu if I did, could I just cut off the extra connecter or would that cause problems?

For sleeved cables getting extensions may be something you want to look into, Cable Mods has really good complete kits:

Grey primer will work with a white top coat but I would give it a test on a piece of scrap to see if it's still usable first and still properly dries on and cures with proper adhesion. Primer is used to help promote adhesion especially on bare metal, your backplate is pre-finished so it's just extra measure, but be sure to properly prep the surface by scuffing it up with >400grit sandpaper or scotchbrite to give it something to bite into. Be sure to clean everything before painting or that can cause issues.

one last question, is it worth it and will it improve the looks i looked into my computer and wasnt so sure any more but i have never been someone to make aesthetic choices. here are some pics of my rig at this point do you think painting the back plate would look good?? also is there anything i can do with the extra connector on the gpu power cable. and do you have any other ideas of how to make it look better?

For the cables you could get sleeved cables which will clean things up a bit, other than that maybe painting only the top plate of the CPU cooler to color match if you like can help. For the GPU blackplate it's mainly up to you personally I think it would look good either black as is or white both can work in this.

personally i use plastidip for anything i might need to RMA so i can remove the plastidip paint easy.

i never use base coats before i use plastidip, i normally paint it with atleast 6layers of plastidip or till the results looks good. 15min between coats for plastidip.

for the cables i would get sleeved ones, if you don't wanna or can spend money on sleeved cables you can paint them aswell if you like to,

i also have a white/black s340 theme build and i did some simple art work on the front and vinyl wrapped the top for a cleaner look.

here is how my one looks.

hope this give you some ideas :)
