Disk drive states wrong format whenn writing

I feel like I should know this one but I don't lol my client asked me about their disk drive today saying that they where trying to put pictures on a cd  that already had them on it. I checked with him if he was a rewritable disk and he was. But when he goes to hit copy to disk or drag the files over he gets a message stating wrong format is being used.

He is on windows xp and the second machine he tried it on was a windows 8.1 laptop same result.

I wanna try to make it easy for him so if anyone has any troubleshooting steps I could try let me know.

Optical.mediums aren't something I'm used to troubleshooting

Thanks for any help
