Hello people of the LTT Forums, I am in need of some help. I am new to networking and thought I'd try to make a home local server that any PC on the WiFi/Network can access. Though that is my future plans. Right now I'm stuck on creating the accessible server itself. Here's how I've got everything: Main computer (not server host), connected to the internet by WiFi; a random DSL Modem I found, to connect the two PC's together to hopefully make a local link between the two, both PC's connected by cat5e ethernet cables to the Ethernet ports on the back (no internet from DSL link); server pc running Windows 7 Ultimate (no internet connection, just Ethernet to the DSL). Willing to send photos if it may help and other information. Thanks for the help in advance.

What server type app are you using?

I'm going to be using it for data, like movies, music ect. So it can all be accessible by any PC in my home anytime. I've figured out the folder sharing so I can read/write folders. Now I have another problem. I'm only getting 11MB/S max for transfers. Then once that's improved how do I make that any computer on the WiFi/Ethernet can access those shared folders? Thanks.

Yes but what are you using to make it from a regular PC to a NAS?  Are you using a server type app like FreeNAS?

I'm just using Windows for now. I just have the HDD installed internally. No NAS hot swap accessories.

Then that's part of your issue :) Download FreeNAS.  You can find multiple set up videos, it's quite easy.

So if I try FreeNAS OS I should get faster network transfers right?

You should considering the optimization factor.  It's also not really an OS but a program for the purpose of turning any computer into a NAS.

So if I use the FreeNAS software (guessing it's software, haven't looked into it yet), I should get faster transfer speeds and a easier local server setup is what you're saying? I'll look into it and report later today on my results and future problems.
