1. Inform yourself about the OSI Layer Model.

  • Focus on Layer 1-4
  • Deep Focus on Layer 2 and 3

2. Get  a easy knowledge about networking hardware

  • Firewall

3. Details of MAC Frames and IP Packets

  • Detailed MAC (Ethernet) Frame
  • Detailed IP Packet
  • Encapsulation Processing
  • De-Encapsulation Processing

 

4. Fundamentials of a IP Network

  • Unicast Address (easy)
  • Subnet Address (middle)
  • Broadcast Address (easy)
  • Gateway Address (middle)
  • Difference between MAC Address and IP Adress ---> Yes they are different!! -> Every device has both of them (middle)
  • Arp Protocol (middle)
  • Calculating IP Address in Binary <-> Decimal (middle)
  • Subnetting octetwise (middle - hardcore)
  • Subnetting bitwise (hardcore)

 

5. IP Address management (IPAM)

  • Self IP (easy)
  • DHCP IP (easy)
  • DHCP Server (easy - middle)
  • DHCP Relay (middle)
  • VLAN (middle)
  • Shared Vlan - outdated (Hardcore only for nerds)
  • Management Methods
  • What is DNS -> only fundamentals - Managing DNS servers is A HUGE topic

Following :) I feel like it would not be out of place to say that I'm looking forward to this.

 

Beginner myself and my job would be moderately easier with some networking understanding.

Could you also add a "What to include when reporting slow speed?" I can write up the DOCSIS part. I have done it a couple times for other forums. Give a man a phish, he eats for a day, teach him how to phish, and he eats for a lifetime. xD
