My Dad wants to make a HTPC, he wants to play FPS games and steam mainly but I dunno what GPU would be good for 4k 65Inch tv?
I know trying to play games on a 4k tv will need a high end GPU, What would it look like playing a game at lower resolution than 4K on a 4k tv?

And whats the best way to not get coil whine?

Sorry I'm new to building PC's

Depends on the game and on the card you ultimately choose. You can easily max something like TF2, HF2, CS:GO or Garry's Mod at 4K on a 290X. if you're looking to play AAA titles at 4K high settings... you're going to need more than a 980Ti. A couple of 290Xs or 7990s would be nice. But the latter setup would need a 1500W power supply.

The best way to eliminate coil whine is to run folding@home on the GPU for about 24 hours.

My brother maxes out all games at 4k with his 980ti with at least 50FPS. That includes games like MGSV, Witcher 3, and Fallout 4.

I know they talk about folding on the WAN show, but what is it and how do you do it?

That's a good point, I suppose. Witcher 3 and MGSV are Gameworks titles as well afaik, so I'm sure that helps. Fallout 4, though... it's based on the Creation Engine, which was used for Skyrim, so... relative to other titles that have come out (like Rise of the Tomb Raider) it's really not as hard to drive at 4K. If we're talking about something like FC4 or AC:U (yes, I have invoked the Games that Must Not Be Named) then OP is going to have a hard time no matter which way he slices it.

I want to pull out my old copy of Homeworld (1999) and try it at 1440p now... I wonder how it would work at 4K :P

It's just an altruistic thing where you devote (or donate, if you want to call it that) computational resources to bruteforcing protein chains for cancer research and the like. It doesn't have to be folding, it could be scrypt mining or something that taxes your GPU beyond its intended capacity.

There's a folding@home subforum on this forum and a subreddit elsewhere. either one will help you get started if you want to do that in particular.

What would you recommend? dumb question, how does taxing the gpu help coil whine?

Doesn't matter, and I don't know - loads of people complain about coil whine here, and for some reason, pinning the GPU at 100% for a long period of time seems to sort it out in the end. Not guaranteed to work or anything, but it seems to be the most effective solution for most instances.

Ah I see, thank you for the help :D
