Prodigy Airflow Inquiry

Go to solution Solved by WoodenMarker,

I have a Bitfenix Prodigy. It should come in next week. And yes, that's why I wanted for a positive pressured setup. I just did not know how to go about doing it.

Just have front intake and rear exhaust and you're good.

Good Evening people, I'm here to ask about my planned airflow setup for my first computer build. My plans are as follows:

post-39052-0-92856000-1378703648_thumb.j

I've decided to go with a Positive net Airflow to keep dust out but I am quite unsure about my current setup. All the intakes shown here are filtered (I am planning to mod the front and side intakes to have filters) so coupled with the positive air pressure this setup will hopefully keep the insides clean.

First question: I am perplexed as to why the top fan slots are filtered. Hot air rises so the most logical place to put exhaust is up top, so why are they being treated as intake slots?

As we can see, I have 6 intake fans and only 1 exhaust fan. I am counting the PSU and Graphics Card fans here which are intakes.

Intake list:

1 x 230mm Bitfenix

2 x 120mm Bitfenix

2 x from ASUS 760 card

1 x from SeaSonic G Series SSR550w

Exhaust list:

1 x 140mm Corsair AF

Second question: is this setup going to adequately cool my components? If not then what do you guys propose?

Use the 230 and 140 as intake and the 2 120s as exhaust

Alright, that makes sense. Does this also mean that I should mount the CPU heatsink fan so that it blows air towards the front of the case?

I agree. Use top two as exhaust and 140 at the back as intake. As you said yourself hot air rises so in my opinion you shouldn't work against that. I assume you don't have a clear side panel so no worries about seeing the cables at the back of the fan.

I think the reason top two fans are filtered is to give you flexibility in case you really wanted to use them as intake. Also I wouldn't count the power supply fan as intake as it does not affect the airflow of the case at all.

Front to back is best.

Front and bottom intake. Rear and top exhaust.

dont worry about positive AF in the prodigy, you have holes in the side that the graphics card will pull air though anyway. in fact, that setup will benefit from negative AF.

AAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGHHHHH!!!!

Thanks a lot for the input people. I'm quite nervous since this is my first build. I was one of those kids in highschool who spent their parents' hard earned money on Alienware gaming laptops. Only when I started college that I realized that building your own desktop is better in so many ways.

This seems like a good plan. But now that I think of it my CPU heatsink might be too tall to mount the second 120mm fan up top. We shall see after the case arrives next week. And okay, so PSUs take air immediately outside from their intake fans then? So it's like a Blower-style GPU cooler?

You could do that to

Okay, if I verify that the second top mounted 120mm fan fits I will strongly consider doing this.

ah... please use paint

Got it. Will use paint in the future.

Thanks WoodenMarker and Mentalguy. After reading a bit last night I understand that that's the best setup in general for PCs. But won't the insides get all dusty if I don't have positive AF? I'm buying filter material to help keep the air that the graphics card pull in dustfree.I am basically going to velcro a filter to the vented sidepanel. Anyways, so if I have -AF then that might be for nothing then?

Again, thank you for answering my inquiries. Also, I apologize in advance for my seemingly basic questions.

What's your case?

Insides get dusty if you have negative pressure. Positive pressure forces air out of cracks that keep dust out.
