Hi so I'll get straight to this how I usually do with all my other posts.

I live in a long 1 story bungalow. Keyword there being long. Up one end of the house in the loft I have the router, some router Virgin Media gave me when I went with them. Up that end half of the house it works fine, so in the kitchen, living room, dinning room and office and part of the hallway. But way at the other end of the house I have the 3 bedrooms and the bathrooms closely grouped together. I have ran an ethernet up that end of the house and it come down to a wall socket in one of the bedrooms where wireless connection is the worst. Obviously you would think awesome wired what's the problem well I have mobile devices such as my phone and tablet and videos buffer all the time if I try to connect to main network, it has about 1 bar connection strength. So my question is i have a ethernet run what product/item do I need to turn that ethernet signal back into wireless again. I get confused with all the names of them like ap, booster etc. I have a wireless relay that relays the wireless signal but that is abosuolte pony and want a better solution to the problem. Hope you can help!

Thanks, Luke!

Possibly another router where you've brought the Ethernet up? I have a router downstairs, but the reception isn't great upstairs, so I ran a 50ft Ethernet cable upstairs to near my PC and put an old router I had laying around near my PC.

Spoiler

Would this work, and what router would it have to be?

So far it has worked for me. It doesn't have to be a good router, the second router I have is from like 10 years ago, but it works for my needs.

I think DSL is for modems. If your ethernet connection in your room already has internet connection, then you don't need a modem. I think this article might help you: http://www.linksys.com/ca/support-article?articleNum=132275

If indeed, that's what you're trying to do, I think you'll need something like this: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2398080,00.asp

Please, someone correct me if I'm wrong.

  • 8 months later...

Finding a wireless router can be difficult.
There is lot of new routers available with different technology but one
should know them initially what to buy and what to ignore so,  Here
some good

resources to get started.

Pleas be aware, as others already briefly mentioned, that wireless extenders will only make the problem worse, especially in urban environments with a lot of networks overlapping.

What you'll want to do is to buy cheap access points (not routers, they should only do wifi), shut off your existing wifi, and connected them to the router with wires.

I can highly recommend 2x ubiquity unifi AC-lite if you wan't to save money, 2x unifi AC Pro if you wan't a medium lineup model, and 2x Aruba 310/320 series with Instant firmware, if you want the top of the line, enterprise wifi solution.
