So I've gone back and fourth the past several months between spending roughly $200 to $400 more for Haswell-E and either R9 Fury (Non-X) or R9 390X...

However I think that this...

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/T79GK8

Would be a better option though I want to know a little more about skylake since this is going to be my first build and being aware that I could save quite a bit by going with Devils' canyon which sounds like it it's still quite available and a better bang for the buck. However is the 6700K more worth it than the 6600K? I might do occasional photo editing and animating but I'm guessing I'll mostly be playing games that make more sense to have on a PC than a PS4 (Mostly single player games and older games).

You'll get a lot more performance getting something like a Xeon E3 1231v3 (basically an i7 4790 @ i5 price) and using the money saved to get an R9 Fury.

In terms of performance the 1231v3 and 6700 are really not that far off, we're talking less than 10% in at best.

For editing and animation 4 cores/8 threads will perform quite a bit better than just 4 cores/4 threads. However, since you only occasionally do that, it may be better to get that 15-20% increase to gpu horsepower for what you mainly do, as opposed to the roughly 15-20% increase to something you only occasionally do.

Personally, you still can get the best of both worlds going for a 1231v3 and fury combo.

I don't think you need an optical drive these days so I ditched that (I aint used for 2 years, aint had one for 15 months), also buy windows from microsoftshare, G2A etc. I also swapped the NEX psu with the G2

Ok good stuff, I swapped the monitor (dell is good) to the Freesync IPS Asus (equivalent of the ROG) which is 1440P and upped the GPU to the 390X

I do kind of like the idea of being able to have DDR4 but it is still a little spendy. So I guess that's an option... Now how will the availablity of that Xeon be around mid/late July to early/mid August. (It's going to depend on how much longer I might have to go without bearing weight on the ankle I broke and when I can get a job and how much I'm going to make...)

I suppose it's more of a gaming monitor too... I personally could see the benefit of having an ODD but it would save me about $50 and thanks for catching the PSU... The one thing I might change in yours would be the Sapphire 390X to an MSI 390X unless the saphhire one is more reliable...

Xeons have never been really all over the market. Since the newer batch of xeons still aren't making big hits the 1231v3 is still widely available (well, about as widely available as a xeon gets) and will most likely continue to be for some time now. You could get away with waiting that long I'd wager, and if not then you could always just nab the skylake version of it for roughly the same price.

ddr4 has come down a lot in price lately, so its not really the thing that makes the xeon so much cheaper. Since the xeon doesn't overclock and doesn't require a z97/z170 chipset you can get way less expensive motherboards, and its just inherent price of ~$230 for the chip itself, even though it is quite literally a 4790 w/o integrated gpu.

Ddr4 also isn't really any better than ddr3 when it comes to performance in 99% of applications. these days ram speed doesn't really matter anymore unless you're running an apu. ddr3 2400mhz performs identically to ddr4 2400mhz, which all perform within margin of error of ddr4 3600mhz, its basically meaningless these days.

The sapphire is pretty much the best AMD brand and from ive read it has great cooling also

I have the previous Gsync Asus (its away for RMA at the moment) and from what I've seen i'm glad I made the decision

@Atmos @stealth80 Thanks for both of your options...

I think what I could do is this

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/NBHzBm

But If I can't find a 1231v3 I'll just spend more on the 6700K

;) Just remember that when you come to replace your GPU (unless Nvidia stop Gsync support) you will need AMD again to utilise Freesync

That's fine I think I'll stick to AMD for awhile anyways...
