Yes.  I don't know EXACTLY how it works, but windows being activated isn't stored on your drive.  When windows is activated it stores some key that lets the OS know that it's activated.  I'm not sure how to resolve this, but I'm sure if you contact windows they will give you a new key if u give them the old one and let them know what happened

I can help with programming and hardware.

it stores it in the bios or somewhere on the motherboard

well, i had to call MS this morning to get my windows server key to work again, lets just say my argentinian friend saved my ass before MS could even connect me trough to the person that does windows server key related issues...

although i've heard you can re-use desktop winderp keys a few times, and you should just be able to punch the key in again. (providing you kept the key written down somewhere, like you should)

It tracks the mobo and links activation to that. It's a dum way of doing it that *supposedly* prevents stealling activated HDD to get windows.

EDIT:ignore statements with as much intelligence as windows activation

If I use words like probably or most likely, it is because I dislike certainty. These words can probably be omitted and the sentence read as a certainty.

I don't think stealing hardrives is their problem, its piracy they need to stop, but the motherboard thing is pretty dumb, Quite a hastle.

not as much "stealing the hdd" but more so to stop people cloning an activated install all over the place.

Yeah. thats more realistic.

If you have an OEM version of Windows, the license is locked to the motherboard. It has nothing to do with 'protecting stealing HDD' and what not. You pay less your Windows, but it is not transferrable to another. The only time Microsoft will be nice, is if your old motherboard was broken, and exact replacement does exist anymore.
