I'm looking for a 140 or 120mm closed loop cpu cooler for the am3+ socket. The reason I want a 140/120 is because I have the cm storm scout 1 case so, I do not have support for a 120mm rad... This was stupid on my part and I should have gotten a c70.. When I upgrade my mobo and cpu in a few generations I'll probably get a new case. However I still want to be able to cool my cpu enough to overclock it to 5GHz. I'm at 4.5 right now with the stock cooler so, it shouldn't be very hard to do. Also, value is very important to me. I don't necessarily need a super performance h80i or something like that I just want one that will preform better then an air cooler. Or I want a value air cooler. I do not know what is best to get so I put it in water cooling. If an admin thinks it belongs somewhere else feel free to move it.

First off - the water cooling in the AiO sector for 120/140 is not about value. :) Most high end air coolers will outperform a 120/140 AiO. And even some 240's... and AiO will give you decent temps, but should allow you to run a bit quieter then some air coolers, etc. If you are looking to push the boundry in OC and want a good cooler, but are that limited, I would say get a good air cooler. Noctua, Phanteks, Thermalright all make very high end ones. For the same amount of coin, you will get better performance. Just make sure with those larger air coolers, you can clear your ram if you have high profile...

For "value" air coolers, the CM series are really good - Hyper 212, Evo, etc.

Those are high profile ram. What motherboard do you have?

But how do I know if it'll clear my ram? (gskill ripjaws with heat spreaders)

Unless I am mistaken, ALL ripjaw ( even the blue 2400mhz ) series of g skill ram is precisley 40 mm high. . Noctua nd d14 and the phanteks ph tc14pe will allow you to use ALL three 140m sized fans on both of those coolers and just comfortably touch/sit ontop of THAT ram's heatsinks..and this will not cause any problems. My friend uses his 3770k with the phtc14pe cooler on that exact same ram maxed out all day every day for the past 19 months straight as he is using 2 instances at the same time of Handbrake to rip and shrink his blu ray and dvd movie collection that he has built for the past 5 years.

the email I just received from PHanteks a week ago included a diagram showing precise measurements of their recommendations of ram height..but not necessary what WOULD physical fit. The diagram shows less than 40 mm then right next to that labeling it shows 32.92 mm.

I physically measured the g k skill 2400mhz 8 gig stick out of my friend's build ( he has 4 total sticks that he uses) and it is precisely 40 mm in height. yet ..on his gigabyte ga-z77-up5 th motherboard with this exact air cooler...he did not have to adjust/move the first " push" fan of the cooler ( out of the 3 on there) up any to accomodate for room between the bottom of the fan and the top of the ram's heatsink. It comfortably was touching and not snugg against it at all.

Plastic on the bottom of today's fans included with high performance air coolers won't be melted or really scared at the very pathetic heat output of any decent ram like g skill ripjaws..unless you overclocked the crap out of that ram raised the voltage ( which unless you're running ONLy an APU with a dedicated video card, that would be pretty much pointless)

Thus in reality it's ok of the ram touches the bottom of your big fans on that type of air cooler. If it hasn't caused any problems after over a year of use...chances are it will never cause a problem.

Cheers.

What about this one?

http://www.amazon.com/Silverstone-Heligon-LGA1155-LGA1156-HE01/dp/B008N8GELA/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1362806819&sr=1-1&keywords=silverstone+heligon

I was comparing this to the Noctua nd d14. Which one is better performing? I don't care about noise as long as it isn't whiny and high pitched. Or if you've read any good reviews can you link them to me?

I have a Hyper 212 great air cooling for price but i used Corsair Vengeance those are high profile and had to position in a way that would let me push pull, but can't put anymore ram in blocking one of my DIM slots

I just joined today and saw your post. I am considering the very CPU and motherboard your friend is using. I have been bouncing back and forth on my cpu cooler (due to RAM height worries) and what you wrote has peaked my curiosity. Do you think you can get pics of your friend's CPU/Cooler/Ram setup?
