Issues installing windows 7/8..

Not sure where to really start with this.

It's rather odd... I can't install windows 7 or 8 without this computer bsod or restarting randomly.

I get bad_pool_headers when trying to install win 7

I get kernal_auto_boost_invalid_lock_release and driver_corrupted_expool among many others for windows 8. Sometimes I'll get a clue screen but there's no error text, it's just blue..

I'm trying to do clean installs on a wd 4tb black drive.. I've got 32gb of ram, but pulled out half and have tried other slots and tested the ram (which have come up passing).

I'm not sure what to do. I literally can't get windows to install under any condition.

I'm running it on a asus maximus rog viii hero board. which, I'm thinking is the cause of the issues, I've had nothing but trouble since I've had it. But, anyone have any ideas?

Also, sorry for the lack of details but I'm doing this from my phone so it's a pain in the butt.

If you are sure that your OC is stable, granted you have any, then the issue could be that the HDD is formatted with MBR and not GPT. You can either partition the drive into 2x 2TB drives or depending on how you are installing the OS, you can do the following...

  1. The board must support UEFI
  2. The OS has to be 64bit Win7 SP1 or Win8 or 8.1
  3. Boot with DVD but start with UEFI Boot not standard Boot, to do this launch the boot device list and it should say DVD and UEFI DVD(<--- can be done in a UEFI bootable USB disk as well)
  4. Delete the partition and create a new one, windows will create additional partitions along with it. This makes it to GPT
  5. Install windows normally.

You can also just remove the 4tb drive and do the GPT formatting on another PC too then just install it back into the aforementioned PC and install windows how ever you are doing it now.

A water-cooled mid-tier gaming PC.

bios update MAY help (or a rollback) check for similar issues with the board. *disclaimer* this can brick your board if you lose power or it corrupts, it may also make the issue worse.. But shouldn't

I would try on a single stick of ram..

I don'T PreSS caPs.. I juST Hit THe keYboARd so HarD iT CriTs :P

So,

I'm super duper stumped. I ran memtest most of the day, ram came back fine. All the tests passed. I pulled out the old motherboard and got a new Asus Z170 Deluxe. I'm STILL having the same problems. Although, it's a little bit different...

I've updated the BIOS, it's running 1602. I thought maybe it was the peripherals or something else. I pulled out my GTX 980ti, I'm using the onboard video through displayport. I tried installing windows with just my mouse connected (I unplugged my keyboard so I only have the monitor and mouse plugged into the machine), and then my keyboard (Same thing, just my monitor and keyboard plugged in). Both times, I had the same issues.....

I LITERALLY only have the monitor via displayport, and either my keyboard or mouse (USB) plugged in to the machine.

At post everything seems fine, I'm running a core i7-6700k (Not overclocked at the moment)

Everything is set to defaults... So I'm honestly kind of stumped. I've tried just one stick of ram, different slots...

Now, when I'm installing Windows 8... Instead of giving me a BSOD it just restarts usually around the 70 - 80% range - on the getting files ready for installation section.

The only thing I haven't tried is like each different slot for ram with different peripherals. Like dimm slot 1 with mouse then keyboard, dimm slot 2, etc etc etc.

Also it's worth noting that both the keyboard and mouse work in the bios just fine and have no issues. I've tried other mice, although I don't have another keyboard to test with. But even if that were the case, wouldn't it work when I didn't even have the keyboard plugged in at all?

I didn't have any extras around, I got another set of corsair vengeance lpx 8gb sticks @ 3000mhz. I also thought maybe there was an issue possibly to installing windows on the WD black drives, so I got a 512gb Samsung evo pro ssd... and gee, what a shocker. I was also unable to install win 7 or 8.

The only thing thats been the same has been my i7-6700k.

..I have an older i5-6600k, when I get home from work today I'll try swapping the procs and see if that fixes it.

Seems odd though. *shrug*
