Hey, so I just got a cyberpower laptop with a 980m with g syinc, and I remember in a NCIX tech tips video that linus said there were modules you could put into the asus monitor to make it g sync compatible. Are tose modules still available and are they for any monitors or just the asus one? I have a dell g2410 that I got for free about a year ago and I'm horribly addicted to 24" screens now, so if i can upgrade it for better gaming without buying a new screen, I'd be excited. If that's not the case, oh well.

I'm pretty sure they are monitor specific to some extent. The pins that connect the module to the panel itself may be a standard, however gsync modules are put on panels that "work well" with variable refresh, and you can't put it on any old off the shelf monitor.

ah, good to know. I'll probably kick myself for a bit for not using my new comp to it's potential with an old monitor, but at least I'll know what to get in the future so I don't break something. Thanks!

The sold G-Sync module from NVIDIA only worked on the ASUS VG248QE, and other than ebay, I highly doubt you'll even find one as they are not made anymore. It was more of a test run I believe.

You will need to buy a new screen with G-Sync if that is what you want. Also, depending on your hardware, there are other (and better) options than the VG248QE and XL2411Z such as the Acer XB271HU (27", 2560x1440, IPS screen, 165Hz, and G-Sync).

Unless you intend to be gaming on the old monitor, it should not be too much of an issue (I believe you can have gsync enabled on your laptop screen, and not on the dell monitor)

Laptops don't even use a g-sync module. It is a slightly different standard that works directly. It might be possible to find a way to flash the panel to a g-sync compatible driver variant, but don't bet on it.

Yeah, I'm probably gonna game on the big screen, as the new laptop is only 15.6" and I'm a creature of bigger is better. As long as it doesn't hurt anything, I'll use the big screen for gaming and get a new monitor when I can.

Is there a preferred brand to stick with when it comes to g sync monitors? I'm new to this and I want to do it right so it'll last me as long as possible

Not really, just that for IPS + 165Hz + GSync the Acer XB271HU has far better quality control than the competing ASUS PG279Q, so it's recommended to get the Acer.

I'm not looking to g sync the laptop, but g sync the main monitor I use. The laptop I know comes with a g sync screen and card, I'm just stubborn and don't want to play my games in squinty eye-strain vision in a 15.6" screen. Sounds like I need a g sync monitor anyway, so time to save up I guess

Technically this isn't actually known, and at best it is an additionally locked down variant of the standard, but yes the end result is identical.

According to ExtremeTech, Mobile GSync didn't appear until Adaptive Sync was published.

Technically Adaptive Sync is just the ability of DP to support variable refresh rates. Software is required by GPU manufactures to actually make use of it.

Yes, but that train of logic is NOT causal or rigorous. Example, fission power was discovered and harnessed after coal, and both heat water to product electricity so clearly fission power is really coal...

It is PROBABLE that Mobile GSync is at least extremely similar to the Adaptive Sync standard. I just wanted to point out that again "technically speaking we can't confirm it uses the same standard", which means it probably doesn't quite (perhaps just with extra DRM-type bs) given how much experience is out there now with eDP 1.2a
