Local network and a shared folder is probably the easiest.

So I have ascended, and I just wanted to know how would one go for transfering important data from a labtop to a regular HDD, one that is made to sit in the case of a desktop?

you can remove the hdd from the laptop and plug it into your desktop.

You have a few options.

1) Get a USB to SATA adapter to connect the drive, transfer things you want to keep.

2) Backup important things to an external drive, then use that drive to connect to a PC with the other drive in and transfer.

3) Transfer the files over LAN connection (if the other drive is in a PC). Something like Windows file sharing is a quick option.

4) Move the laptop HDD into a desktop with the other drive.

There are other ways, but those are the easiest.

Ideally, it's best not to transfer programs, as you can have installation issues. What you'll want to transfer is your games, your music, videos, pictures and documents. Games from Steam can be transferred simply by taking your entire steamapps folder.

I would do a fresh install of the programs if I were you. Don't wipe your data off the HDD yet though. If there are any config/save files from your old programs that you want on your new rig, then do a fresh install of the program and overwrite the new config/save file with the yours. If I were you, I'd just configure each program manually again rather than going through the hassle of maneuvering through various system directories. Steam has their cloud service for game saves though so for most of your games you might not even have to transfer anything.

I actually couldn't underclock my 5 year old GPU to make it as slow as a next-gen console.

Back up everything you want by simply drag and drop every folder, BUT please dont do that with the entire ProgramFiles folder. Its not about issues with compatibility, its about functionality, some programs must be installed to work properly, I think that if you want to keep things like settings, profiles, project files you can manually save those files from the installation folder or wherever they are located and put them back there once you already did a clean install of the software. Dont worry about compatibility issues unless youre working with different versions of the same program. Be careful with steam games, Cloud storage is actually not for every single game in your library.

Yeah I initially had cloned a bunch of downloads and shite I didn't want to bother reinstalling but I've not only learned so much, but also don't want to go throught the hassle of dealing with possible issues, so I've pretty much just copied the Steamapps folder and that's it.

By the way, do any of you know if a new HDD needs to be formated? And if so, can I do it in litteraly the freshest windows 10 install ever ( like I close it after the usual desktop screen popped up)
