Buying a CPU Used

Hi, What is the risk of buying a locked processor (i5 4460) on eBay used?(scrapyard wars stylexD

Most of the sellers I am looking at have 100% positive feedback, have you ever bought a used CPU?

btw loving the new website :D

Well from what I have heard the cpu usually outlasts everything else in most computers.

I'd say go for it.

I've bought a few used CPUs in the past for various projects and never had any problems.  CPUs tend to last a long time.

Of course check the seller's feedback and make sure you're happy with it first.

The only thing I've ever bought used is my second GTX 970. Go for it if you trust it, but just ask what usage it's had and for how long he's had it.

Do you frequent Reddit? There's a community called HardwareSwap. There's no Ebay fees, just Paypal (Which gets you buyer protection). The prices are more realistic too.

They go for around 130-140 shipped there.

I go there for most of my used stuff!

Anyways, to answer your question, little to no risk. Ask for the original receipt, sometimes they'll give you it and then you have more of a chance at a warranty claim if things go south. Which is pretty unlikely in of itself. No real risk at all I would say, personally I don't see it as risky and I would do it.

I'd be more comfortable buying non overclockable CPUs since you can be sure they weren't damaged from a botched overclock.

About the only thing I'd worry about is the seller lying about the model of the chip.

There are reports about people receiving the wrong chip, some sellers have gone so far as having the markings on the chip's surface say one thing but when you boot up and check your system it is another, usually weaker chip.

This is mostly a thing for the overclockable consumer level i7s from what I've seen and I doubt someone would go through such trouble for what your'e looking for.

Risk isn't much. Anyone who posts a picture of the actual proc instead of a stock photo is likely a legit seller. You have to remember that when you're on Ebay, unless someone's account is hacked, the onus of liability falls on the seller. Ebay is extremely aggressive in their buyer protection policies and will refund your money faster than you can sneeze if you got ripped off and the seller isn't cooperative.

I've bought at least 3 CPU's off Ebay, 2 locked, 1 overclockable (2550k) -which actually had the WR for Cinebench R15 until @Jumper118 decided to wreck it xD
