If condensation forms, every part is prone to failing.  Might I ask what happened?

thats not really cold enough to make stuff fail unless condensation kills something

My parents went on a month long vacation during the month of January. They turned off the heat as I was not home during college. I came back to visit this weekend and went to have a little fun with all my old computer parts such as playing around with pfsense/freenas and my HTPC. My old hardware seems to be working fine Pentium 4 and first gen i3, however my ever so slightly more modern first gen i5 system had the error of machine_check_exception. Perhaps I should make a new thread about this.

More information is needed.  Was the machine running in the cold?  Was it just powered off and in a car in the winter over night or something?

If it was just off and in the cold, bring it indoors, let it warm up, let any condensation evaporate and it's fine.  If it's running while at -7 and it's still running or it warmed up while running and it didn't fail... Everything is super.

In the house, month long moderately cold winter. It boots but machine_check_exception.

Some condensation probably formed when it sat in the cold.  Take the PC apart and check each part with different hardware and try to diagnose the broken part.  I'm guessing it it will be the motherboard or PSU.

I'm pretty sure it's the motherboard because that is the only thing I haven't tested in the past 3 hrs. Any way to fix this?

RMA it.  What motherboard is it?  Some companies might not accept the RMA.

It's over 6 years old so yeah not happening. It works during the first step of Windows installing and but then all the machine_check_exceptions start happening after it reboots and try's to finish it.

You probably have a half dead motherboard on your hands.  Did you check the CPU too?  That could also be the culprit.

That would be a pain in the butt to check since I don't have enough time to check it out. I could use my i3 but time is just not on my side right now so it will be for a couple months before I get back to it.

I'd advise you to check your CPU before you buy a new motherboard.  That's because if your CPU broke, then the new motherboard would have no effect.

Yeah, it's not a big deal to me right now so I will see what I can do later on and bookmark this page so I can reference it later and complete the trouble shooting. Just disappoint that the rig with all the best parts is the one that failed on me at this moment.

So you have 1st gen i3 and 1st gen i5, they are both on 1156, you can check on your other hardware(change CPUs and if the i5 works in the other mobo, then you could buy a new one, if the i3 works in the i5's mobo then new CPU, here i7 for 1156 are like 30€)
