Hello! I am working on my first custom PC build and would love to hear some recommendation and thoughts on my part list.

*-Note I will not be purchasing any parts until about April 2016-*

What the PC will be doing:

  1. Programming in a wide range of languages and editors such as Eclipse for Java, PyCharm for Python, or Brackets for Web Development
  2. Gaming; playing games from small games like Game Dev Tycoon and Minecraft, to AAA games like Fallout 4, Skyrim, and Call Of Duty Black Ops 3
  3. Photography/Filmography (low-end); I will be creating videos and presentations so capability to screen record, run Photoshop, and any common video editing programs.

What the PC will NOT be doing:

  1. Editing 4k Ultra HD video
  2. 3D modeling
  3. Playing games in Ultra quality - I do not mind playing games in Medium to Low specs if necessary.

Before getting to the build there are a few things I want to mention.

First, the build started off with a $2500 US budget not including peripherals, so things like the double monitors, and surround sound system will most likely be purchased later as I do have some a TV screen I can use in the meantime.

Secondly, I need help choosing between a dedicated sound card versus one of those digital-to-analog converter systems (DACs). I want to be able to do good audio recordings, but I do not need professional music recording capabilities. Furthermore, I want the capability to swap between headset-only audio (gaming or listening to music) to surround sound system audio (watching movies and such).

Thirdly, what I am most concerned about is hardware compatibility. I am only 17 so my understanding of computer hardware is limited to only what I have read and watched. I took a lot of time putting this list together so most things are compatible, but I could have always made a mistake and missed something crucial. On that same note, I do not fully understand the power supply so I went with 750W, but I do not know if that will be enough for the whole rig.

Please be constructive/supportive and don't hate me for picking one part over another haha!

I went with Win 10 because why not. You don't need a huge PSU even for this PC and if you have any other questions as to why I chose something just let me know.

X99 for sure

this includes a 4k IPS free-sync display, so probably throw in an SSD, maybe bump up the PSU to 1000W if you're going to throw in a 2nd nano and game better at 4k.

so was your end budget 2500, or did you want to get it under that?

I've been looking into lowering the price tag so I was comparing the Asus ROG MAXIMUS VIII HERO ALPHA ATX LGA1151 Motherboard and the Asus Z170-A ATX LGA1151 Motherboard, as well as the

Crucial BX100 250GB 2.5" Solid State Drive and the

Samsung 850 EVO-Series 250GB 2.5" Solid State Drive

Why is the Z170 half the price of the ROG M8 Hero Alpha?

And why is the Crucial $30 cheaper than the Samsung?

Skylake isn't going to be worth it, what budget were you trying to hit then? because if you want something lower cost a Xeon 1231v3 is what you'd want

Otherwise are you doing the 4k editing professionally? Because you'd want a workstation GPU in that case.
