Sometimes the GPU locks at a certain frequency well below the stock speed for your 970. Reseating your card, reinstalling the video drivers or doing a hard reset of your computer usually solves the issue.

So as my title says Im thinking about replacing my MSI GTX970. This due to it becoming unstable lately. What Ive experienced is that it sometime (Specially in games that change and load new maps often) gets framedrops down to >15fps until I restart my game and I thought that the Ram thing with the card would not have that much of an impact, but it sure looks like it. Im having NZXTs CAM up on my second screen while playing to see what goes on.

When the game (Lets say Black Ops 3) runs SMOOTH the card loads 3,9Gb VRAM and Core load lies around 40-50% and no framedrops or anything, I get a smooth 60FPS (Capped it there, uncapped I hit 100+). I can then play for a couple of hours until I take a break and close down the game.

Later on the day I can start the SAME GAME back up and play a couple of rounds on the SAME SETTINGS and see that my GPU loads 3,6GB VRAM and has a coreload of 99% and I get those >15FPS drops ever other seconds or so.

 

So that lead me to contacting the store I got the GPU from asking if there was a replacement solution set up for this, which there is.

 

So my question after all this is. Would it better for me to change to the R9 390 Nitro from Sapphire (Which is the card I would end up with if I made the switch) or should I stick with my MSI GTX970 and just live with the restarts now and then (Sometimes daily other times not at all). If I DO switch I have what I get back from the GTX970 to go on which here in Norway is about 11USD more than the Sapphire R9 390 Nitro

You might have a faulty card, or your drivers could be flipping out. Try software fixes before hardware.

Theory is when you know everything but nothing works. Practice is when everything works but you dont know why. In this computer, theory and practice are combined: Nothing works and i dont know why.

 

Atleast i can manage Some things, like my current OC personal best.

I was hoping someone would suggest this as it has not been this bad before. Ill try clean reinstall of drivers and see. Might be a while tho as I cant reproduce the issue consistently, but Ill report back :)

Well I don't know wether its that or not, but my issue has not been a continously low frequency of my GPU. It has started working well as it should, then seemingly lowered itself independant of anything (As far as I can see at least) where the only thing I have noticed is that when it DOES have my issue it also does not allow the game to use more than 3,6Gb of VRAM. While it does work flawlessly with 3,9Gb VRAM used, it does SOMETIMES struggle.

My GPU was for no reason locked at 537mhz with 99% GPU usage. I monitor my GPU in my Logitech G15 LCD via MSI afterburner. This just happened a few minutes ago. I rebooted my PC and back to 1470mhz and 8100mhz effective on the memory after reboot. I suggest restarting your PC every couple of days. I use Windows 10 64bit. The max on DX11 games that I have seen used is around 2.8GB. I had a ATI 7950 that had Mantle that used all but 100mb of the 3GB of ram but used the same amount of VRAM as my GTX970 in DX11. When DX12 games are readily available we will be able to see if the GPU uses more ram. 

 

I should add if your OC crashes in game this may result in GPU scaling issues or throttling issues in your graphics card. Which is probably what caused my GPU to run at the wrong frequency playing BF4.

If the issue returns Ill make sure to take note of the clockspeeds as well. But as far as I can see my clock speeds are within given specs. I do have my PC off over nights just to prevent issues with my stream as OBS Multiplatform has this weird issue where it will delay audio on stream if the PC has been on for a long time.

I have a I7 3770K at stock speed on a MSI Z77a-G45 gaming mobo with 16Gb DDR3 ram @ 1600Mhz

The GPU is the MSI variant of the GTX970. 

Im running windows off of a Samsung SSD (Unsure which one, but I THINK its the 830 series)

Games are running of a 2TB Raid0 array of 7200RPM HDDs 

 

I use NZXTs CAM to monitor temps and usage.

For reference, this is how it looks when its working as it should. No framedrops, no stutters.

 

I do notice the Coreclock is "capped" at about half of what it normally should be able to reach. Memory clock did hit 3500 when it stuttered as well, but I didnt manage to capture it

Forgot about this post a bit, the problem is still there, but a lot less prominent than what it used to be. Think Im gonna go ahead and close this thread and say that I can live with the occational microstuttering. It has not had any mayor FPS drops since my clean install of the drivers

Are you running windows 10?

I have a buddy WITH windows 10 that doesnt have the same issue.. does that count?. He has pretty much identical setup. Only CPU is different where he has a I7 2600K and I have 3770k, we even have the same variant of GTX970
