Possibly bricked RT-N66U

I followed the Wiki[1] for it down to the very last step.

Here's what I did exactly.

  1. Uploaded AsusWRT Merlin 3.0.0.4_270.24[2] (Worked like a champ btw)
  2. Had CFE version 1.0.1.3 so I thought could go straight to DD-WRT 18946 NEWD K2.6 mini[3]
  3. Cleared NVRAM w/ WPS button (30/30/30 reset)
  4. Had to go through basic setup to access the upload page
  5. Upload DD-WRT 18946 via web gui
  6. Waited 30 minutes, router still not booted. Ping 192.168.1.1 only to have "Destination host unreachable" with 0% packet loss
  7. Tried clearing the NVRAM again, no success in getting router to ping
  8. Attempt to enter recovery mode by holding down reset button on reboot, no success on entering recovery mode

All I can do is make the power LED turn on as well as the ethernet port light up if I hold the reset button on boot. If I clear the NVRAM I can get the wireless LED's to go up but no wired/wireless signal of any type.

I have also tried entering recovery mode and using Asus's firmware restoration utility. I can't enter recovery mode so that doesn't work. This is what I do to try and enter recovery mode. (power light never glows, even after holding for 2+ minutes)

  1. Unplug router
  2. Hold down reset button until power light glows on/off

When I tried to enter recovery mode, I've tried static & DHCP IP addresses. With DHCP I get 168.254.239.223 w/ subnet mask 255.255.0.0. For my static IP I assign 192.168.1.12 w/ subnet mask 255.255.255.0. When I ping the router with the static IP I get "Destination host unreachable" and 0% packet loss.

FINALLY I am connecting to the router directly through a cat5 cable from my desktop.

Is there anything I can do?

Sorry to hear that, i would be careful putting dd-wrt on partially supported devices.

Im not sure how much we would be of help here, you could try posting in dd-wrt forums: http://www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/

Something wrong with your connection ?

Run the damn cable :)

Quick search on google revealed that you need to upgrade the CFE for DD-WRT to be installed and not run out of ram so fast.

I think in my minds its bricked, its a really risky thing todo if you do not read up on things before you attempt any DD-wrt installation

In both of those they specifically check for 1.0.1.3 CFE version, of which I already said I had in my original post. That's why I skipped what both of those places said to do (my bullet point #2).

Ah sorry missed that totally! But did you check if you had the 64k CFE and not the 32K one?

Harr, darr and a couple of....... plastic earings?
