This is issue of friends. Hes system is 4790K (stock) /w 212 Evo, 16gb Kingston Savage DDR3, Silverstone Strider 500W PSU and 390X in R4. I've built that thing so airflow isn't issue.

He got 390X just while ago, stress tested it with Firestrike and temps were fine (don't recall exact numbers). Now after trying to play X-COM 2 with all maxed settings at 1080p hes 390X got up to 90C. I told him to test with Valley. Temp with Valley was 81C, and even after all Valley settings turned on it was only 84C. Meanwhile lower settings in X-COM brought temps down to 80-85C maxing at 87C.

So question is simple. Is this common with said game? Would reinstalling drivers help or better to wait new drivers, or game update? Drivers have been reinstalled after card was switched because of fan issue. (Old card was Asus 280X which will most likely be mine soon).

Did you confirm the fan is running at 100% when playing? From my understanding 90C is not that unusual for the higher end AMD cards.

One option is to get some high quality thermal paste, take the cooler off the GPU, clean it up and apply the new thermal paste. Sometimes that helps with temps even with a new card. I know when I used Artic thermal paste on my GPU temps went down about 4 degrees.

Going into such DYI isn't really my thing. And I would be one to do it because I got better vision...

I'll ask about fans.
