Really dont know what monitor to go with. Really debating Ultrawide

Smellslikeralph

Ok so im new here. Ive been a member on OCN for a very long time but I really wanted to branch out to new forums to meet new people. Ive been watching Linus tech tips for along time now but never really did anything with it such as joining the forums

Anyways to make along story short I really wanted to go 4K but I currently cant afford the horsepower needed to run 4K so im been in a debate for a good month now. to go with a 27 inch 1440P or to go with a 2560x1080 Ultrawide. I currently have $400.00 I want to spend and really dont want to go over that. The monitor I want is the LG 29UM67 Ultrawide but it does have a bigger brother the 34 inch. Im worried about going with a 34 inch because it will obviously support a smaller PPI.

LG 29um67:$303

LG 34um67: $400

will going up to the 34 inch result in a worse image quality? As for if I decide not to go ultrawide Im not 100% sure which 27 inch 1440p to go with. I was looking at the ASUS PB278Q but it seems that all is not well with alot of reviewers stating crazy backlight bleed. Thoughts and or help would be appreciated. I cant go look at monitors myself I live in a small country town and I have tried to go to bestbuy and they have squat in store. Nothing ultrawide or 1440

I run a 4690K with an MSI 970, 16gb ram for main specs. Nothing special would have loved to snag a 980ti but its a steep price. Current monitor is a 23 inch Dell 1920x1080 IPS (S2340M) ive had it for 2 years and its served me well but now im looking for BIGGER

I was looking at ultrawide before I bought my monitor, and I feel as if there isn't enough support for it yet for me personally to make the plunge.  I went with Plan B and got a 27" 1440p monitor, the Acer B276HUL.  It's not gaming-oriented or anything fancy like that (no G-sync or 144hz), but the picture is absolutely gorgeous.  It came to me at 100% brightness with terrible light bleed, but once I stepped it down to a less retina-searing 20% the light bleed almost isn't there and the color is still vibrant as ever.

With your GTX 970 you should have no trouble running 1440p, as I do pretty well on my older GTX 770 (less VRAM too).

A 2560x1080 34" ultrawide is going to look worse than a 27" 2560x1440 because the pixel density is lower. It will look like a 27" 1920x1080 monitor.

I just recently changed from a 27" 2560x1440 montior to a 34" 3440x1440 ultrawide. Pixel density remained the same, but the ultrawide is here to stay.

I would go for ultrawide but if you do 1440p or it's not really worth it in my opinion. Btw even if you don't have the horsepower for 4k you can run games windowed 1080 or 1440 if you want to. I do every now and then on especially demanding games it's not as bad as it sounds it helps with eye strain if you get that as well

THe reason for considering ultrawide was the awesome viewing angles and the Linus videos but of course he has more money then i do so I cant really justify a 3440x1440 ultrawide since more then likely I will have to upgrade to a 980ti.

So its either the LG 29 2560x1080 ultrawide OR these 2 ACERS which seem to score extremely well in reviews

Acer K272HULbmiidp Black 27

Acer K272HUL Black 2

As stated and im not sure why it just seems most asus monitors HAVE or show some sort of backlight bleed. I dont know if its a trend or normal. The asus N27 stated above is over budget. I just cant stretch it to $450 because I have other things for my kids I need to do. Bunk bed, new Mattresses and what not. Max can only be $400

Oh my I did not know the Acer B276HUL had gone up that much, my bad.  I believe the Acer K272HULbmiidp shares the same panel as my monitor, with the exception of having a well fitted stand and USB passthroughs.

im going to make a decision. on the LG 2560x1080 ultrawide or the Acer K272HULbmiidp. I will decide in the next week.

Take in consideration the content you consume, etc.  Some games don't play well with 21:9, and if you do a lot of Youtube like myself, 16:9 content will be a lot smaller on the ultrawide monitor.

I am quite biased towards the 1440p monitor, but I hope my input has helped

My Zalman monitor went kaput recently, I happened to be at a local tech mall and decided to check out some monitors. I spotted an AOC 2963PM that was on sale so I snagged it. No regrets whatsoever, tried a number of games and all but CoD series worked great @ 2560x1080 (Unreal II failed to launch, may not have anything to do with the monitor's aspect ratio though). I find, like my EyeFinity tri-monitor setup, that with the added aspect ratio of about 33%, games are more engaging.  Another reason why I went with UW is this:

I decided today to go with the Ultrawide after going and checking 1 out at bestbuy. They had 1 in stock which is the LG 29um57 and I really LOVE the wide FOV. Should have my taxes on tuesday so im going to pick up my monitor then. I also sold my current Dell S2340m IPS to a friend for 80 bucks so the LG is only going to cost me $233 ish

i ended up buying the LG 29UM57 at bestbuy to test stuff out and I absolutely HATE this monitor. I love the ultrawide but this monitor IMO is crap. Every setting or custom I use looks HORRID. I cant get good colors or blacks. Everything looks semi washed out. My Dell S2340M that is 2 years old destroys the LG in every way. Maybe its because its Glossy VS Non Glossy but Its going back.

Maybe check out one of Acer or Samsung's ultrawide offerings.  If I remember correctly they do cost a bit more, but it's worth it.

i sat here for hours I just hated it. My 2 year old Dell S2340m ips destroyed it in colors, blacks and vibrance. That LG was just crap IMO. I think im going to wait awhile and just keep my Dell monitor for now. There is nothing wrong with it and its still in brand new condition.

I picked up the Vizio 4K and I love it but only after I did my own Calibration. I felt like all the stock settings out of the box were just awful. Once Calibrated this thing is killer.
