Hello Linus Tech World,

I am wanting to build a home nas server for media streaming, storage and pc backups.  Currently I have 2 small Netgear ReadyNAS duo's (6tb total space) that are running low on space.  I recently acquired a small 11u rack from a client and I would like to start using it for my home network.

To be honest, since there are so many choices for cases, OS, drives ect now I just don't have the time to research them, so I am looking for some help / suggestions.

I have work in the I.T. world for 25 years so building it won't be a problem or if one of the pre-built units like Synology or QNap are a better option thats fine too.  Just looking for some recommendations.

Here are the rough specs I am looking for:

  1. Silent or as quite as possible (every tech guys dream right?)
  2. 2 to 4u with 8 bays will most likely start off with 3x6tb WD RED drives
  3. 2gb ports ... 10gbe not necessary at this time plus home wired with Cat5e
  4. Processor / ECC Ram?  I know differnent OS's require different specs but I hear great things about FreeNAS and that does not look like it requires too much.

Budget $3000

Thanks for any help everyone,

Leon

Hello Linus Tech World,

Well you'll probably want a Xeon 1231v3 with possibly 32GBs of ECC memory so you don't have to worry about that ever

and then I'd say maybe get the 4TB HGST drives over those, should be more reliable though you'd need more of them naturally

FreeNAS only needs a USB to run off of, so no real need for a boot drive.

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

Streetguru,

Does the nas really need Xeon proc?

I have used HGST years ago will take a look at them.

Any recommendation on a case?

Dunno anything about rack mount cases

Is your budget $3000 USD, ordering from the US? because the Xeon 1231v3 isn't going to make a dent in that, the whole is probably going to be doable at less than $1500

An i3 would likely be quite sufficient.

I would suggest ECC memory. Skylake C232 & C236 chipset motherboards support ECC.

FreeNAS can boot off a USB drive.

Have you considered Hitachi (HGST) Deskstar NAS drives?

Your budget seems on the high side for a DIY NAS.

80+ ratings certify electrical efficiency. Not quality.

Well not having built one before I wanted to make sure my budget was high enough :-)

Thanks for the suggestions I will go with this and see what I can find.

I have read that FreeNAS works better with a HBA then a RAID controller so that will save so cash for the drives.
