New Build for myself

Go to solution Solved by BigDay,

for your budget, i'd go with a 6600k and a 980 ti. the 980 ti below is a beast in terms of overclocking potential. also, this is a non sli build. i left the case out because i didn't know which one you'd like... the 980 ti below draws 300w so thats why i included a 750w psu

if you wanted to make this sli capable, you'd need a 1000w psu and an sli board like the msi z170a gaming pro, which is the cheapest

edit:

the ram below has a CAS of 13, which is better than 15. i wouldn't worry too much about ram frequency. 2133 is the base

Hey all,

My old gaming rig was toasted by lightning about a year ago and I have finally decided to build up a new one. This is what I'm currently looking at (missing Optical and PSU because I've already got those). Would you mind giving me your thoughts before I take the plunge? I'm only really interested in using it for gaming, but I do work from home on it frequently (standard IT admin stuff, nothing to intense).

Thanks!

That'll work great, it's pretty close to what I built myself when the 980 was released. And its still running swimmingly

If you plan to sli in the future, maybe a 750 or 850 (since you can get decent deals on them). If not, you might be able to manage with a 650 or so if not overclocked severely. As usual, gold/plat certified and all that jazz. Anyways, don't see an issue with the build, it's quite solid.

Still new, but learning

Wow! Thanks for all the quick replies. To respond in order:

1. Yeah, I thought about going Skylake. I figured with how new it is, It'll be more settled in by the time I need to upgrade again. More options is always nice.

2. Thanks for the welcoming! I grabbed the EVGA Supernova 750 80+Gold.

3. I don't really plan to SLI. I just figured I'd grab a beefy single card and be done with it, for now.

Overall, I'm glad to hear that I didn't overlook anything. I think my mind is made up on my selection. :) thanks again for the feedback!

I may do a build log or something to show off the rig once it's built - I always get excited to see others' personal rigs.

Get the Fury/Nano over the 980 then, it´s more powerful and tends to be cheaper.

I think as others said u should get the Fury over the 980 just because it seems like a better value. But if you have company preferences it's fine. Also, why not go for latest like skylake?

I've always been a fan of GeForce cards and their drivers. As for the Skylake question - I don't have any experience with Skylake yet, and I'm a little hesitant to jump in on "cutting edge" hardware. The Haswell family has been around the block, and I know what to expect with it. I may change my mind if I hear a compelling enough argument, though.

Alright. I've taken into consideration some of the suggestions here- I've modified my current list and built a Skylake build. Mind giving me your thoughts?

Haswell

Skylake

PCPartPicker links would be easier. At least make the lists open to the general public.

Yeah, sorry about that. I couldn't find the items I was looking at on PC Part Picker. The Skylake selections seem to be thin right now. I made my lists public (sorry, brain fart).

Still can't get into the lists without having a newegg account.

A large number of Skylake parts are available in pcpartpicker using the search function. Skylake Xeon for example. On has to manually add the price from a favorite merchant. One can also add a Custom part by providing title, link, and price.

I actually really like this build. I was afraid of going with the 6600k, but I suppose I can always upgrade later, if needed. I'll likely go with something like this.

Thanks!

only get the 6600k if you plan on overclocking it. otherwise, get the 6600 instead with an h170 board

the 6600k or 6600 should be fine for gaming. i think the most important part is the gpu. don't get me wrong, cpu intensive games like gta v work much better with more powerful cpu's, but most games rely heavily on the gpu
