I previously posted in the GPU section about this but I recently had a budget revision and want to increase the scope of my upgrade.

I recently built this PC for gaming and programming. I want to be able to run the most recent games at 1080p 60FPS+ and for programming I run the latest version of Visual Studio for C++ and Notepad++ for Lua.

Current Setup:

  • Case: NZXT Phantom
  • Processor: i5 6600k
  • RAM: 8gb Crucial Ballistix Sport Dual Channel Kit
  • Motherboard: Gigabyte z170x Gaming 5
  • PSU: Corsair CX430M (Temporary, Got it cheap, Need upgrade)
  • HDD: Some WD 1TB (From previous OEM PC)
  • SSD: Samsung Evo 850 120GB
  • GPU: AMD R7 240 (Also from previous PC, Need upgrade)
  • HP OEM Keybaord and Mouse
  • Cooling: 3 200mm Case Fans, 2 120mm Case Fans
  • CPU Cooling: Corsair h50, Push Pull w/ 2 120mm fans
  • DVD drive from previous build

So basically I want to defiantly upgrade the PSU, GPU and Mouse

My budget for the upgrade is going to be 1000$ USD. I obviously also want to throw in some other better components as well, unsure about exactly what I should upgrade now and what should wait.

On my previous thread they suggested a nVidia 980ti which I believe is a good choice, but feel free to recommend something else. All feedback is appreciated, thanks :)

Go here and select a PSU class from tier 5 or above first of all,

A 980ti is a great future proof choice for 1080p gaming.

You can get Mice for really cheap compared to other parts so that's just up to personal preference, personally If I were to buy a new one I'd get Steelseries sensei but its personal preference.

390x should be fine.

U won't be playing aaa games on 4k@70fps

Evga 850 gs/g2

Logitech and corsair mice are nice

I might eventually have a monitor upgrade in the future, and also want to be future proofed, do you believe the 390x would be able to handle 1440p for the next year or so?

If you are focusing on 1080p, you can make do easily with a 970. Hell, 970 can run 1440p just fine.

If you plan to move into further resolution, or multi monitors that would dictate how much the upgrade of the gpu is needed (or sli) and in tandem, the psu needed.

Still new, but learning

All AMD card pull up once it is a resolution above 1080p. So amd would be better for 1440

Amd Gpus are better at resolution above 1080p

Interesting, completely different response from before, I want to spend almost the whole budget on this PC and if I did go with something like a 390x or 970 then what other parts do you recommend upgrading with the remainder of the budget?

4790k, 8 gb ram

I'm going by his mention of using nvidia, I'm not bothering with a whole amd vs nvidia master race here....

Since he specifically mentioned 1080p, that whole comment is kind of unneeded. Why bother mentioning gpus he doesn't need or want when he specifically mentioned his target resolution?

? I have a z170 chipset board with 8gb ddr4 already lol

This is an upgrade to an existing PC not a fresh build, I'm not gonna go back to a previous chipset and buy a whole new motherboard

970/390 for the GPU. G1/G2 EVGA for the PSU.

Everything else is pretty close to what I have.

I've been looking on newegg and doing some math, if I go with a lower end graphics card (970), I can get

  • gigabyte 970 windforce
  • samsung 950 pro 256gb
  • Corsair RM750
  • Corsair K70 Mechanical Keybaord
  • Corsair M65 Mouse
  • 2 x 4GB Crucial Ballistix Sport

and that comes in around 930$ including tax and shipping, I'm just stuck between this and a better graphics card with less extra components, I'm worried that the 970 won't last me for a year or two, because in he future if I upgrade my monitor or if games start becoming more demanding I'm not sure if it can keep up. If anyone owns one i would love input, because I can easily afford a much higher end card but I'd be missing out on these other cool compenents
