Minecraft: [proxy] Lost connection to server

I seem to always get [Proxy] Lost connection to server when i try to join a server and when i try to join my friends i get internal exception java.io.ioexception. Can someone please help me. I have tried restarting/reinstalling minecraft, rebooting my router and other things don't work. Please help
