I would like to know a build that is under $550.  I am using this for light gaming, everyday use, and VMs

my first idea is

This is ok, but you should expand your budget if you want to get better value parts.

Yeah looks good imo. I think you could get a better cooler for 11$ though, and you might want an SSHD instead of an HDD

 

EDIT: Or add an SSD of course.

Can you spend another $50? This will give you a lot more performance.
