Hi everyone,

This is my first time here and my first post here. I live in country where power is a very expensive commodity and funding/jobs are not so wonderful. To add to our misery is the fact that we are reliant on solar energy/power for many of our day to day tasks. Now don't get me wrong we don't live under a rock. But we do have limitations.

Our first and foremost is lack of proper internet speeds. Where I live I get about 500kb up and 400kb down and peak at 2Mb up and 1Mb down. Truth be told we hardly see speeds in the Mb range so right there I am personally happy that I have the option to push the resolution on YouTube down to 144p. Next to this is our outrages internet costs as we pay per 1mb of data "out of bundle" and have to buy "cap" data that is scary expensive.

So to sum it all up:

Expensive slow internet

Power restrictions

Not to mention components are extremely expensive and I am personally thankful to AMD for making cost effective hardware.

Now for a little while I have tried to to get your attention and to maybe help on the energy consumption front. Laptops are great but also extremely expensive so not really a option when it comes to computer games especially.

So I come to you asking for some help. I need to figure out if it is at all possible to do a Gaming PC build that consumes 300Watts of electricity or less. It also has to be cost effective and need to handle some type for water cooling because where I live it gets hot seriously hot. Hence why solar is such a good option sadly also very expensive.

Now I know it is taboo to talk about "Video game consoles" and really I am not a fan, enjoy my keyboard and mouse thank you very much. BUT they do consume 100Watts of power and that is seriously not bad considering it can handle each of the games that is basically designed for it. I do know some consume more but this particular system is "new" and according to the fact sheet it consumes 100Watts "i sill don't believe it but that is me".

So can you help a bloke out? Help figure out what rig can handle good gaming consumes little power and is cost effective? I hate to do this and has nothing against Intel but AMD is far more cost effective. The rest is up to you and i will be looking forward to your tips on this topic as i think energy will become a bigger and bigger thing anyway.

Now i don't expect you to go and buy the hardware or even do a youtube on it but some "if any" feedback would be cool

So Peace People looking forward to your replies. Also just before you think i cannot spell and my grammar sucks English is my second language so sorry if i misspelled anything or did anything wrong.

thanks again for reading looking forward to your response.

Problem with amd is that they aren't good with power efficiency. An i3-6100 57w, and a 950 or 750ti (750ti will use less) the i3 with the 950 should be around 200 or so, with the 750ti it should be 150 as the 750ti uses significantly less power.

I7-6700k @ 4.8Ghz, EVGA Z170 Classified, Corsair Vengeance LPX 4x8 32 GB, EVGA FTW+ ACX 2.0 GeForce GTX 980ti 6 GB x3, 2Tb WD Black x3, 1Tb Samsung 850 Evo, 400Gb Intel NVME PCIE SSD, Corsair RMx 850w 80+ Gold, Corsair Strafe Cherry MX Brown RGB, SteelSeries Sensei Raw

Do you mind me asking where you live? Purely just out of curiosity.

Be aware that even water cooling will not give you the results you may think it will, if the fluid in the pipes is hot (due to the room temperate) then the cooling will be no where as efficient as most of the data/statistics posted online. Air cooling may be just as good, however it may come down to trying either and see how well it works.

  • 5 weeks later...

i guess it is just wishful thinking but i have to admit that gaming consoles got it right most of them run on 100Watts of power or less depending on make and model. They give reasonable performance VS power consumption. i am tempted to get myself a PS4 and just run a version of Linux on it. That way i can get word processing done AND or just play some games.

i just don't like the idea of a PS4 because if it goes "unlike a PC" you cannot repair the thing. a PC you can repair it to a reasonable degree.

as for where i live LOL i am not at a full disclosure yet but i live in a third world where power is fast becoming expensive and a problem at the same time... See some parts of our country is less effected then others so it wouldn't be fair just to say "dream land sucks when it is only a tiny parts that is actually the problem"

just to add a PS4 is like crazy expensive thanks to import tax and added tax. meaning if the cost price is $400 US then by the time i get my hands on it, it will cost about $600 US.

Yea i know AMD's run hot, i know AMD for a long long time and few of there CPU's ran cool but purely based on cost AMD is far less expensive then Intel and gives good performance. Air cooling doesn't work for AMD unless you strap a million fans on it and place it next to a air-conditioner. I  am running a 6 Core black addition and it is using water cooling and really i am happy with my temps. BUT my PC consumes more power then what the solar system can pump out so it drains the batteries and all the rest...

Right now i am actually watching "lets play" YouTubes because i cannot play GAMES... you cannot believe how much that sucks.
