What is a hosted web app?

I'm trying to use Windows App Studio to start building an app. And I happened to see it and I was wondering what Hosted web apps are.

What i'm struggling with is the concept behind them.

I don't think web apps are what you'd expect them to be.

Web apps are mainly things like Facebook, as well as online registration systems for institutions, and things like Office 365.
