You can test it easily, just connect it to another computer. It will not screw up anything.

It fcked up my computer. I had 2 drives with one not booting, I could see it on the second drive so you should try.

It will be good unless it was what failed.  There's no harm in plugging it into another system to check and get the files off if you can.

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?
