Make boot SSD as D:/

Go to solution Solved by Opask,

I may not have explained myself properly.

I want my SSD to be D:/ and have windows boot from there. and I want my HDD as C:/ so my programs auto install to there.

All the tutorials I have seen online about transitioning to SSD show the SSD as C:/ and your HDD as D:/. I'm not even sure if its possible to have the computer boot Windows installed on D:/

Yep but the way windows works doesn't allow for that. Your boot drive has to be C:/ as far as I know. What you will have to do is select your D:/ from the installer every time.

The other option is setting up a symbolic link from your programs folder on your C:/ drive to another folder on you D:/ drive. I can't remember how to do this on windows but maybe someone else will or you might have to look it up.

Ok so I made the decision to jump into buying an SSD. I have managed to copy windows to it and now my pc boots up super fast  :D .

BUT...

now my SSD is the C:/ so when ever I go to install new software it defaults to this drive, where I want to to default to D:/ (My HDD)

Is there and way to reassign my SSD to D:/ and still have windows boot from there?

So you want your software to install on D:/ instead of your SSD?

Just change the install path to a folder on your D:/ in the installer.

do you have windows 10?

Yes

No I want Windows on D:/ and my programs on C:/ (as that is the default for all programs to install to)

Make another Program files named folder on your HDD and just change drive letter when you install new software. Easiest way and works 98% of software.

That is how I have it now but I wanted to know if there was a way of making Windows be on lets say D:/ (the SSD) and the HDD be C:/ so that programs will auto install there and not onto the SSD (Which is currently C:/)

I had a feeling this was the case :-(

It might be possible but would require much fiddling with drive settings, formatting of both drives few times and reinstalling windows. At that point you need to ask, if there is even point in it. In the end it comes down to Windows having hard coded default install path. Which means that even if you could change drive letters, software would still default to SSD.

The actual default install path can be changed with some registry edits. But those might also break things.
