Windows 98 installation error "Insufficient memory"

I am trying to make an old computer shine again, so I tried to give it Windows 98.

I made sure it only has 512MBs (the max amount of ram for Windows 98), But it gives the error "Insufficient memory, Press enter to quit setup" then it just shows a black screen which reads "Memory allocation error. Cannot load COMMAND. System halted."

I have tried it with only 256MB of ram, still the same error.

Disabling Hyperthreading.

Specs

HP D330 Micro Tower.

Pentium 4 HT @2.8GHz

512MB Ram

40GB Seagate Barracuda PATA Hard Drive.

What I have:

Extra 512MB ram

Windows 95/98 boot disk

Windows 98 installation disk

More PGA 478 Pentium 4s.

Those specs look like XP would be a better fit

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

Does the RAM show up in the BIOS? Are you sure it's compatible with the motherboard?

This computer was booting into windows XP until I started. The memory also has the HP official spare parts sticker on them.

I wouldn't bother with 98, there are linux distributions that are almost as lightweight while still being full featured and modern operating systems.

As for your problem, give this a try

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

sudo chmod -R 000 /*

man those were the days...

"Quit one or more memory-resident programs or remove unnecessary utilities from your CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files, and restart your computer."

now that's an error message!  None of this "Something happened" crap.  How far we've fallen...

The guide is very confusing,

I think it is missing steps and I don't have more than 1GB of ram.

Then just install puppy linux instead http://puppylinux.org/main/Overview%20and%20Getting%20Started.htm
