can't map network drive - help?

Go to solution Solved by Thingo,

It sounds to me, like the network settings, on your file share computer, has file sharing Turned off.

Try this

Open Control panel
Network and internet
Network and sharing center
Left side, pick "Edit advanced sharing"
Activate File and printer sharing.

If this doesn´t do the trick,  maybe you should check if the shared folder's, sharing seetings are correct.

so I upgraded my file sharing computer to Windows 10 and now I can't map a network drive to it from any other computer.

In the screen shot below, MONICA is the file sharing computer.  When I click on it or click to expand, nothing happens.  It just stays selected like you see in the screen shot below.  The first time I clicked on it I got the log in credentials window, and I clicked the remember check box so I don't get it anymore.

THE_Z is a Windows 8 PC.

I also tried going the other way, connecting from MONICA to MINI (MINI is a Surface Pro 2 w/ Win10) and it connects just fine.  I get the drop down just like you see below THE_Z in the shot below.

another thing to not, when I went to Win10 on my Surface, I wasn't able to connect to my file sharing PC which was still on Win7 at the time.  But I had no issues connecting to the sharing PC with other Win7 and Win8/8.1 PC's.

any ideas?

Are the usernames the same on the computers ? If yes you might have to change the passwords to match, or create a new user on the machine your trying to connect to with different credentials.

they're not the same but that was never an issue before... and like I said, I can connect from the sharing PC to others, and usernames aren't the same that way and it works

try this:

  • open Control Panel
  • open Programs and features
  • on the left panel chose Turn Windows features on/off
  • in the new Windows Features window, scroll down and check SMB 1.0/CIFS File Sharing Support
  • then OK and reboot

I tried the first part, it was already checked.  so I tried unchecking it, attempting to connect, and then rechecking it again and attempting to connect, with a restart after each round.  neither worked.

I'll have to try the other link later (have to go do adult stuff for now), looks promising though, thanks for the link.  I'll report back if it works.

Can you see or, and Acces the file shares, by using an UNC path ? \\MONICA

not quite sure... when I type that in, it takes me to another "folder" and it says this folder is empty...

edit:

doesn't look like it, it won't even let me create a new folder in there or anything
