A New Dual Xeon Build

Bigdaddy5414

It's been quite a while since I have done anything on here, but my current X99 system at my shop is mostly going to be going home to do a virtualized computer there.

This was the original thread on it http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/237946-my-x99-rig/

IMG_2564.jpg

I have not really been doing a lot of gaming besides getting back into WoW somewhat a couple of months ago. Last spring I sold two of the 980s which left me just the one I have today. It was fun to play around with but just wasn't getting used.

But anyways the girlfriend wants to start some gaming again, and I have brought all the decent computers here to the shop and just laptops left at home. Which is what started this new build, going to do the 2 gamers 1 computer thing with a good chunk of my current hardware. I haven't thought about what I'm going to do for graphics cards, was thinking just a pair of 960s for each of us on it, and I'll leave the 980 here at the shop for the xeon build.

Now for the xeon build I have already ordered the processors which are on the way for tomorrow according to tracking, and the motherboard is also ordered but not shipped yet. I am about 90% sure I need to get RDIMM memory for it but I want to find out if it works with regular UDIMM first. Don't really need the registered memory as far as I care, that's what my servers are for, but if I have to I have to I guess.

I will probably never use all these cores//threads but another fun thing to play around with lol, and can always throw in the server rack too at a later date when things get changed again.

Some of these are my existing items like the peripherals, monitors, psu, case, mechanical drive, etc.

I know it will be a tight fit in the Switch 810 which is not officially supported. I actually really like the Thermaltake Core X9 chassis which doesn't officially support it either lol.

The RAM is up in the air at this point as well, if I find out regular stuff works I will be thrilled. If not, I'll be starting with either 8 or 16g sticks and dual channel as it will only be four pieces to start, and I can drop another 4 in at a later date I figure even with 8 gig sticks I can still reach 128GB total which is probably never needed.

The Z10PE-D16 WS was chosen over the Z10PE-D8 WS because of the extra RAM slots and the IPMI. I use IPMI all the time with the servers and it would be awesome to have in my workstation. The IPMI can be added on to the other model but the 16 already has it. Don't really care about one less slot and only 3 way SLI vs 4 way as well.

The Samsung 950 Pro has been a hit around here lately with the last 2 builds I did for customers involving one. So I have to get one for myself, it is just insane. I'm not sure if the M.2 on the board supports it 100% I haven't really checked into NVME support yet, and if it does if it gets full speed out of it. I have some PCIe adapter cards I could use as well.

Those smaller Noctua coolers I think will suffice, without any OC really other then a little base clock.

I'm like a kid in a candy store with the xeons and motherboard ordered. Just have to wait and see on memory and make up my mind on the coolers.

When your RAM costs more than your case....

LOL yes it does, I don't get all that excited over a case. I thought of even putting it on the wall for customers to see when they walk in.

Actually with the current system it did too easily. DDR4 was brand new at the time.

For sure, it should whoop the current build by a good amount.

The older version but my comparison from other builds I have had. Except for those xeons put in there from sample data. That Q6600 is my checkout counter computer.

Lol, I wonder how many times higher the score is going to be compared to my amd a10, atleast 8-10 times faster (than the a10s 340cb).

It would probably fit though, mATX dimentions are 12x9,6 in, and that board is 10x10 in.

As I have £155 lying around and the total cost for board + dual Xeons (X5460s) + RAM (2x4GB ECC DDR2) is £90...  I really want to but I don't want to spend my money xD

I have a quad xeon server in the bottom of the rack. Its older, They just dual cores with hyper-threading so it shows as 16 threads. Has 32GB RAM. It stays powered off, was a waste of money lol, so much juice is consumed to power it.

Have the xeons and the coolers came in today. Still waiting on the board. Says shipped last Tuesday but tracking shows it was never picked up. I really hate eBay bit it was about $60 cheaper. Got it from Superbiiz on there. Won't do again! Fun eBay messages back and forth.

Got a question for you. Would it be better to buy something like a Qnap or Synology nas, or build a server something like yours in a case or rack mount case? I think the 8 drive Synology is $999.00 U.S..

Build your own. That is a pretty weak machine for a grand with just an Atom processor. I have a server in the rack running FreeNAS with a 4 core/8 threaded Xeon and a supermicro board with LSI controller onboard. Much more powerful.
