Hey guys,

I'm looking to build myself a PC for the first time and would like to know what you guys think of my possible build, or if you guys have any suggestions for improvements. The computer would be mainly for gaming and programming/editing therefore would like to have a i7 processor.

Processor: Intel Core i7-5820K Haswell-E 6-Core 3.3GHz LGA 2011-v3

Motherboard: Asus x99-A LGA 2011-v3

Case: Thermaltake Core V71 Extreme

RAM:  Corsair Vengeance Pro 32GB

GPU: EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Ti

HDD: WD Blue 1TB or WD 6TB

Power Supply: EVGA 220-G2-0850-XR 80+ 850w

Cooling: CORSAIR Hydro H80i

SSD: Samsung 840 EVO 250GB

My budget is around 3k - 3.5k and this setup runs me around 3k so far. (CAD) I already have peripherals so I'm ok there.

Looks good.

Are you planning to SLI in the future? Because that PSU is overkill for just one 980Ti.

'Fanboyism is stupid' - someone on this forum.

Be nice to each other boys and girls. And don't cheap out on a power supply.

Spoiler

CPU: Intel Core i7 4790K - 4.5 GHz | Motherboard: ASUS MAXIMUS VII HERO | RAM: 32GB Corsair Vengeance Pro DDR3 | SSD: Samsung 850 EVO - 500GB | GPU: MSI GTX 980 Ti Gaming 6GB | PSU: EVGA SuperNOVA 650 G2 | Case: NZXT Phantom 530 | Cooling: CRYORIG R1 Ultimate | Monitor: ASUS ROG Swift PG279Q | Peripherals: Corsair Vengeance K70 and Razer DeathAdder

Pretty solid build, why not go for a 850 evo? Also using pcpartpicker helps manage your build.

@HKZeroFive I am planning on going SLI in the near future, but for now the single 980 Ti is my goal. The board definitely has room for improvement though :)

@corbetto for the 1TB drive? I could go that route, but I went with 250GB to keep the cost down. I think I'd rather put the extra $200 in cooling first and then worry about SSD.

@RaptorCandy Do you have any suggestions or improvements that would push me beyond a 7.3/10?

Better cooling. I would suggest an Corsair H100i GTX or NZXT X61 Kraken for watercooling and Cryorig H5/H7, Be Quiet Dark Rock 3 for aircooling.

Get a newer SSD with more capacity or add another one for RAID 0 configuration.

Get an 2TB HDD from Seagate or 3TB HDD from Western Digital Black Series.

Personally I'd take something like the Asus Z97-A and a 4770k/4790k and use the extra money for a H100i or NZXT x61

I currently have the 4770k and the x61 and have it OC'd to 4.5ghz and it performs exceptionally well.

I might even be inclined to drop to 16gb of RAM, though I do have a 1TB ssd so if it runs out of ram and has to use the paging file it's still pretty quick.

Other than that everything else looks good, 7/10.

I can't wait to get a pair of 980 ti's. Though I did get lucky and pick up 2 barely used special edition 780's (non ti) with 6gb vram each. A company had bought them for a GPU processing project and after a week had decided to go with AMD cards instead, so I got them for about $180 each
