Wifi on Hackintosh build question

Go to solution Solved by Daveeede,

In case anybody looks back at this thread, I bought this card from TP-Link and it was recognized as an airport card out of the box. No issues whatsoever.

TP-LINK N900 TL-WDN4800, 450Mbps Wireless N Dual Band PCI Express Adapter

Hey guys,

So I put together a hackintosh for a friend, but have been snagged on one issue. It seems the wifi card I picked up for the build is not compatible with OS X and cannot be made to work at all. The card is a Gigabyte GC-WB867D-I and is based on the Intel Wireless-AC 7260 mini PCIe card. I had used this adapter in the past and it worked great (On Win8/10), and also supports Bluetooth 4.0.

Had I done my research properly and known that Intel wifi cards don't work for hackintoshs I would've never bought it. I am exploring my options, but would like some of your opinions. I figure these are my options:

1) Sell the adapter and buy a compatible USB WIFI adapter and separate BT adapter.

2) Keep the adapter, but switch the Mini PCIe card for a compatible Broadcom/Atheros one.

3) Keep the adapter for its BT (which can be made to work in OS X supposedly) and pick up a USB WIFI adapter for the OS X system.

Now if somebody knows a way to get the card to work that would be awesome, but I am not crossing my fingers for that. And has anyone had experience playing around with the Mini PCIe adapter from gigabyte? I know at CES, Linus showed one from Silverstone that can accept the wifi mini cards but I don't think that's a better option at this point.

Finally what is your experience with USB wifi adapters? I used one a long time ago and I remembered it being terrible. Maybe they've gotten better?

Thanks!

you could look on ebay for an airport card and for a mpcie to pcie adapter (like the silverstone one, they are not the first to make it)

that way you will have the most support because it's a real apple part

Looks like I'll return the card and take the hit. I'll probably order one of those Tp-Link pcie cards that are compatible with mac out of the box. Thanks for your suggestions @simson0606.

Is wired not an option?
Buying a USB wifi option is probably best bet if not, but I'd try your hardest to get a wired connection to it.
