Hard drives are usually loud, but I would back it up just to be safe. especially if it was like a sudden increase or something. My mom had that same model, and it killed like 3 hard drives from heat, because Apple's cooling solution is terrible. It also cooked the "logic" board. So yeah, Back it up to be safe, maybe set aside like 50 bucks for a new 1 or 2 tb HDD

Further to what others are saying, especially if this is a new noise/sudden increase in volume, back-up.

On a personal note I would assume that even brand new, SMART at 100%, running near silently etc drives are just about to fail and have back-ups (and system images [1]) all over the place ( I have another drive in the system, have an external drives that I do back up to, even have photos of the boys [when they were kids] on a USB drive at my brother's [these photos are irreplacable most songs/movies can be downloaded again any programs reinstalled but these photos can NOT be replaced]) as a sort of disaster recovery. I may be paranoid but as these steps cost so little in time and money can see no reason not to do them.  Think if I was running a business from this machine would have some commercial back-up in the cloud.

[1] This reminds me. Time I made new ones so I don't have to install all the updates again for the last three months.
