So I was trying to remove some thermal paste that was on the sides of the GPU die and I ended up smearing most of it in the transistors and I've been doing some reading on how to remove it. Someone said you can use a tooth brush... Can I do this?

Yea sure, just make sure it's a soft bristled brush and dip it isopropyl alcohol before you scrub gently.

• Take a disposable bowl.

• Take 90% or higher isopropyl alcohol.

• Pour about one cup of alcohol into the bowl.

• Place GPU side down into bowl.

• Let soak for about 5 - 10 minutes.

• Wait.

• Take a toothbrush, preferably a soft bristled one and dip that into the alcohol also.

• Softly and I mean softly brush till all the thermal grease is removed.

• Let GPU dry on either a lintless towel or a paper towel till the alcohol is evaporated.

• Throw the bowl away. In a recycling bin. Good for the planet.

Dipping the whole graphics card in isopropyl alcohol is probably a bit overkill for cleaning the little tiny capacitors next to the GPU die.

A brush for teeth is a fine solution, but thou must make sure it is soft, so not to damage the board!

It looks as if the peasants have risen up, and found swords!

But their sword's look a little short, if you know what I mean!

Good! The squires need training anyway!

Concerning temperatures led me to believe that was the problem.
