Problem with OCing FX-6300

Go to solution Solved by MrSnakes,

no dice, still unsolved, might endup buying the 970A-UD3P Gigabyte motherboard

Hi guys,

I have a huge problem when overclocking my FX-6300 AMD CPU. My speed is 4500MHz, with temps around 54C and 49C under load (using a prime95 stress test). However occasionally it will drop to 2999.84MHz from 4499.76MHz. The CPU temp doesn't even change when this happens it just drops to 3000MHz every few seconds for no apparent reason.

EDIT: Also happens when on stock settings like 3500MHz.

Yes AMD Cool and Quiet is off.

Here are my specs:

MB: ASUS M5A78L-M/USB3

CPU: FX-6300

CPU-Fan: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO

GPU: Gigabyte R9 280

PSU: Corsair CX600M

RAM: 4x2GB (8GB) not sure on specific brand taken from prebuild PC's

Case: NZXT S340

disable the energy saving feature  on your board ? ( vdroop , but don't know if it has the same name on amd )

I thought cool and quiet was the energy saving feature.

No VRM heatsink... try putting a fan on your VRMs to see if it solves the problem, they could be overheating and throttling your cpu.

doesnt seem to be working. though I wouldn't be surprised if it was too hot anyway, what motherboard can you recommend for overclocking an FX-6300? and maybe an FX-8350 down the line.

One thing to note though is that the problem happens as soon as I press the test button.

wouldn't it take time for the VRM's to heat in the first place?

Also is it to do with TDP.

Yeah, if it happens right away, it might not be heat but some power limit integrated into the board, I haven't looked into AMD motherboards in a long time, wouldn't know what to recommend you, you could always check if you're on the most recent bios version.

Will do that now.
